It’s very different to Ketoacidosis sometimes suffered by diabetics which is a metabolic state caused by uncontrolled production of ketone bodies that cause a metabolic acidosis. While ketosis refers to any elevation of blood ketones, ketoacidosis is a specific pathologic condition that results in changes in blood pH and requires medical attention. It’s a life threatening condition.
It doesn’t actually make sense to say ‘ketones’ are good for us as if we buy them like vitamins!
Re: exogenous ketones, if your goal is some degree of "keto" metabolism, personally I think you're better off fasting or intermittent fasting or going with keto diet . If you eat a regular diet and just add a couple spoonfuls of exogenous ketones it is unlikely to change your metabolic landscape much.
There has been scuttlebutt about how cancer cells feed preferentially on glucose and while this is true to a certain extent FOR CERTAIN CANCERS, NOT ALL CANCERS, cancer cells will also use ketones for fuel. I don't think there is much of anything new regarding CLL and keto diet info or exogenous ketones. Basically uncharted territory. The theories about glucose vs ketones as fuel on cancer have been on tumor based cancers, not blood cell cancers. If you find anything to the contrary, please let us know.
I have heard and read lately about intermittent fasting as it relates to metabolic syndrome which has been associated with cancers. I've never seen a study other than the Valter Longo study (I haven't seen any indication it's been funded) where fasting relates to cll treatment. gero.usc.edu/cll/
There is some serious work around fasting and type 2 diabetes (Dr Jason Fung comes to mind). As far as I can tell he's not addressed the issues of omega 3-6 balancing in animal products that are not grass fed. I agree that the whole idea of shifting to burning ketones instead of glucose needs to be a shift in diet/lifestyle as said above.
Thanks for this link! I have been following some of Longo's info for a couple years, didn't know he is asking for funding specifically to research fasting and CLL treatment. That is fantastic! Hope something comes of this sooner than later.
I don't think Ketones are a scam for losing weight, but also cause a variety of problems. As far as use for CLL, I did for 3-4 months and can say it did nothing for my CLL. Balanced diet and moderate exercise is best for CLL. Get your body ready for if/when you need treatment. Blessings.
