From Fred Hutch:
The U.S. government released its latest diet recommendations today, based on a report from an advisory panel of experts that came out last February. Fred Hutch public health researcher Dr. Marian Neuhouser was one of those experts and said the new recommendations “can guide all Americans towards healthy food choices to support health and reduce risk of diet-related chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.”
Two key features of the new guidelines: a recommendation that added sugars be limited to no more than 10 percent of total calories and the idea that a healthy eating pattern across a person’s entire lifespan is critical to health.
“Rather than focusing on the minutiae of individual nutrients, people should select nutrient dense foods and a wide variety of foods across multiple food groups,” said Neuhouser. “Healthy eating patterns can be adapted to a wide range of cultural preferences, personal taste and budgets.”
