The huge problem with chronic illnesses such as CLL is that the illness is unpredictable, and generally slowly changing, so it is extremely difficult as an individual to determine whether any change you make has made a difference. You generally have to look for trends over a period of many months to actually observe any consistent change. Meanwhile there's so much noise, it is very easy to become convinced that something has made your CLL worse (or better), but it is just coincidental. That's why they have as many people in clinical trials as they do.
