I saw my doctor today with a very painful swollen large toe. He thinks it is gout. Is this linked to my CLL? Can anyone tell me?

Gout is seen in CLL patients. It stems from a buildup of uric acid in a joint and is more common after treatment. It sometimes can be controlled with changes to diet, or medications like Allopurinol among others.

Thank you for replying. I actually have not had any treatment. I am still on Watch and wait seven and a half years after diagnosis. I count myself very lucky it is so slow moving. Apparently the painful inflamed knee I had six weeks ago was probably gout too. I need to find out what I can do to try and prevent more attacks. Jean

Your doctors need to find out what is causing the gout...some people simple are more susceptable. However, the Mayo Clinic has a 'Gout Diet' you might consider... Link... mayoclinic.com/health/gout-...

I attended my GP on Monday for regular blood test results and mentioned the pain in my big toe which I had assumed was a bunion. GP informed me that it was not a bunion but gout! Apparently gout is common in CLL. Yet another thing I didn't know...Another appointment to get advice from practice nurse. We will be exchanging Christmas cards soon. x

Hi Elizabetha,

I have had three episodes of gout in as many months but it has settled down a bit at present. Apparently there is a daily tablet that can be prescribed. After talking it through with my doctor we have decided to wait and see before that. Another form of watch and wait!!! Hope you get something sorted out. Best wishes.

Hi Jinjo,

Good to know I am not alone. Hope your gout clears up... it just sounds so old fashioned and quite funny. Take care.

Hi Jinjo and Elizabetha,

I have very bad version of gout and few weeks ago a friend of mine recommended me Reesai Joint Health saying that it helped him with his gout. I use this product now for about 3 weeks and have to say that i see huge improvement with my gout issues. Swelling got reduced about 70% and I do not have strong pain any more. Apparently you have to use it for 40 days to get back to normal. Even if it stays on the same level as it is now it makes my life so much different. My friend says his condition is now same as it used to be before he got gout.

Thank you for this. I saw my CLL consultant on Friday and he told me to take paracetamol ! Got an anti-inflammatory gel now and appointment on Monday for more blood tests by GP to try and determine if it is actually gout, arthritis or as I am beginning to fear,

they think that it's "all in the mind".
