My 2 year old daughter has been experiencing bad itching all over for around three weeks. She now also has jaundice and has had a number of blood tests at our local hospital. These tests have shown her jaundice level to be 103 and a possible problem with her liver. She has now been referred to Kings in London next week to undergo more tests as a day patient. I was just wondering what to expect at this appointment and also if anybody else has a child that had similar? Any help and advise greatly appreciated! Andy.
Hi all, new on here after doing some ... - Children's Liver ...
Hi all, new on here after doing some research into liver problems in children.
Hello Andy. My little boy has been under Kings liver unit since he was a tiny baby and we've always felt very positive that things are explained to us, we can ask questions and they really know what they are doing. I'd say don't be afraid to ask questions, (sensible and daft-sounding!) of the doctors, nurses and the Clinical Nurse Specialists. It really helps if you can make it fun for the child too, as much as possible. There are loads of toys, and we always end up having yummy yoghurts and chocolate etc! It's easy to say but stay positive and deal with the worries after little one is asleep, but I expect you've discovered that already over the last few weeks.
I hope they can sort out a diagnosis soon- she's going to the best place in the world for paediatric liver problems.
All the best, and stay in touch!
Alice
Hi Andy, I have been a patient at Kings for over 30 years now and have always been impressed by their incredible skill and effort in caring for me. You really are going to the right place! I would agree that you need to learn the art of asking questions - when I was a baby my mum was famous for always having a question whenever a doctor came anywhere near me and I am just the same now! I find they always answer if you ask!
The only real up aside to having a small child with a long term condition is that very often they get used to hospitals and never really fear them. As a child I used to get upset if we went to Kings and I wasn't allowed to stay the night! I still enjoy my visits to this day. It is like a second home to me. I guess the main thing is to treat going to hospital as a normal thing and something fun. For instance, whenever I had a blood test as a child my mum couldn't stand to watch so she just left me with the doctor and went and bought me a chocolate bar. I never had the heart to tell her that I didn't mind blood tests at all!
Hope all goes well with your appointment.
God Bless
Eleanor
Hi there
Our year old son has a liver diagnosis and has been looked after amazingly at kings. We feel totally safe in their hands as all the staff are great. Ask questions about any tests and how long the results will take and what they arr looking for.We find the more informed we are the clearer everything becomes which makes the whole thing easier to deal with. There are patients on the unit from all over the world because kings are amazing. There are no better hands to be in.
Good luck
Kelly
hello this is a bit late but it is quit scary I should know because I have been there so you should just try to calm him down when you get there and play with him xxx
