Hi Silver27,

Maybe double check the numbers as HDL wouldn't be 5. It might be that it's 1.2 as I don't know what seru is. If LDL is 4.2 that is on the high side.

Did you have a total cholesterol number, usually abbreviated to TC.

Yes the figures are correct my total TC is =6

TC is made up of Ldl and Hdl so 4.4 + 5.0 would mean your TC is at least 9.4 so something is not quite adding up.

I think a further inquiry into your figures would be a start, but the thing that is concerning me is why is he so worried about a level of 6? I think what he may be concerned about is your waist measurement. The new concensus is now that your waist measurement should be half your height. Therefore if you are 6' you should have a waist measurement of 36" - you only have an inch to lose!! Your weight/height ratio is OK and your total cholesterol figure seems acceptable to me!

What is your BP like? Is that within perameters? Do you have a history of family heart disease? If you answer in the affirmative that is maybe why your Dr is concerned about getting you fit and healthy!!

Do you exercise regularly, and I don't mean visiting the gym, I mean daily exercise. Walking every day, running up and down stairs, not using lifts, leaving the car at home when you can and walking to where you need to go. It is amazing how much this goes to improving your health and helping the waits whittle away!! Do you have a dog? Walk him twice a day, and if you don't have one, get one!! It works!!

I think I see what he is driving at. He has divided your total cholesterol figure with your HDL figure and got approx. 5. This is 1 point above what is should be. The guide is 4. Not the end of the world though and good that you have all the info. Those of us on this forum who have been through the mills with tests, etc., will give you all the advice and suggestions that you could wish - and they will be more than happy to advise you. Keep in touch, and best wishes to you.

I sometimes think the more figures the more confusing it is!.

The 5 is the ratio of your HDL to your total, but I think this is a relatively new thing.

Your GP probably thinks your LDL is a bit high at 4.2.

Lots of people here have tried diets which have worked.
