If different statins work in slightly different ways then would it be worth trying 20mg of one and 20mg of another rather than 40mg of one?

There are good reasons for using two or more antibiotics to attack bacteria because a bacterium is extremely unlikely to be to develop resistance to two agents at once. However I can't see how the same argument would apply to statins as hostile cells are not trying to reproduce and the evolutionary pressure is just not there. I would guess it is best to go with smallest effective dose of the most suitable statin. I have been on atorvastatin since 1997 and have had no noticeable side effects. It has almost certainly lengthened my life.

Note of caution: I am not a professional medic.

Hi Seahorse,

Apparently there were two small trials done in Greece and Japan in 2000 with FH patients who couldn't tolerate high doses of one statin so they combined atorvastatin and pravastatin at lower doses.

Information is on medscape.com or just Google atorvastatin plus pravastatin drug trials.

Just came across it when I was browsing.
