This is likely the QRisk2 score. A cardiovascular risk calculation or algorithm.

NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidance suggests that anyone with a score of more than 10% (moderate risk) should be offered help to reduce their risk. This includes advice on making lifestyle changes. Above 20% you should be offered the option of starting medication to lower cholesterol (statins).

Grt thank you so I am ok then ?

PurpleNails profile image
PurpleNails in reply toStagbettle9876

I should have explained that the system used calculates the risk of a cardiovascular disease (CVD) issue developing in next 10 years. So 5.7 is low risk. It’s will likely be noted statins not indicated.

Stagbettle9876 in reply toPurpleNails

O I thought 5.7% was on the low scale as I read over 10% is higher risk ?

PurpleNails profile image
PurpleNails in reply toStagbettle9876

Yes low. 10 -20% moderate Over 20% statins would be suggested.

O thank god , I got scared then . Can I please ask you as I suffer with anxiety , I know not related but last few days woke with croaky voice and headache and chesty , dr saw me and said it’s viral as my back of throat was red and swollen glands , I just did a covid test and it was negative , dr said if u still feel rough by Fri , she wil prescribe antibiotics? But if it’s viral , I thought they won’t work . Sorry to ask , is just I worry x

Stagbettle9876 profile image
Stagbettle9876 in reply toPurpleNails

O dr offered me statins , but I said no as I am eating more healthy now and more exercise , she said ok no problem

PurpleNails profile image
PurpleNails in reply toStagbettle9876

I had risk of 7.5% I was told by receptionist “your cholesterol was a little high”. I said -right- waiting for more information & was told “thanks - bye”

My notes said pharmacist say statins not indicated on QRisk2.

Age is taken into account. Who knows why doctors approach differently?

Stagbettle9876 profile image
Stagbettle9876 in reply toPurpleNails

Yeah the dr said yest while I was there with this viral thing , that my cholesterol was on the high end and do I want tablets , I said no and said I am eating more healthy etc and she just said ok , x

Stagbettle9876 profile image
Stagbettle9876 in reply toPurpleNails

She said hormones and my age cholesterol can climb ,

PurpleNails profile image
PurpleNails in reply toStagbettle9876

Seems like an odd comment. Most hormones decline with age eg menopause and thyroid levels, risk of diabetes increases. Wonder which hormones they mean?

Stagbettle9876 profile image
Stagbettle9876 in reply toPurpleNails

Dr said cause I am going through menopause, things can decline she said , but all my levels were find apart from high cholesterol, Iron

Sugars

Tyroid

Kidneys

Liver

Vit d and b12

All fine

But she also said high stress levels can cause cholesterol to rise and hormones etc..

as said suffer with health anxiety and now have this viral thing lol , it just spirals for me . Awful .. was thinking of hrt ! Xx

Do you view printed copies of your results or have online access?

Doctors say “fine - normal - ok or satisfactory “ for any result within the expected range. Even if it just within range or even on many occasions overlook very abnormal results.

Always check you own results and you need lab ranges with each result, hence printed or online (not hand scribbled or verbal). For many things eg ferritin & thyroid results - in range doesn’t mean optimal & doesn’t mean normal for you.

I now say this is important for every test.

Yes I have results on my online app with the drs

PurpleNails in reply toStagbettle9876

Sure Add item - result & (range in brackets)

Eg TSH (0.98) miu/L [0.35 - 4.94]

Easiest to type results. If you add image make sure you remove any personal information.

I’m somewhat knowledgeable about thyroid results nutrients but add results and I’ll help where I can.

The thyroid results from November do look good they are all well in range and thyroid antibodies were negative which are an indication of thyroid issue being affected later on.

Blood count, bone, u&e all seem fine.

Ferritin level 33 ug/L [30.0 - 250.0]. This is very low. 80 Is a better level. With low ferritin & iron you can get symptoms of breathlessness or have hair thinning. Do you have either of those? If ferritin below 30 GP would (should) have done an iron panel but as within range hasn’t. & sometimes they just say to take an over the counter iron supplement but this is not recommended as your stores can stay low but iron go high, which is just as bad. Your haemoglobin isn’t low which is a good sign you’re not anemic. Try eating Iron rich foods.

HBA1c - do you know how the test works? HbAC1 measures glucose attached to haemoglobin so indicates your control for the past few months - rather than a “current time” reading, Your result is 38 mmol/mol. So is within range [20.0

- 41.01] but it’s not a huge leap to approach pre diabetes.

* HbA1c below 41 mmol/mol (6.0%): Non-diabetic

* HbA1c between 42 and 47 mmol/mol (6.0–6.4%): Impaired glucose regulation (IGR) or Prediabetes

* HbA1c of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or over: Type 2 diabetes

Being careful with hidden carbs. I found using a app to track how many carb you eat very useful, then you can see where the hidden carbs are.

B12 394 g/L [200.0 - 900.0] could do with a little improvement. Look for a B complex to keep B vets in balance. One with methylfolate not folic acid.

Have no experience with FSH & LH hormones

Lab test online is a good site for explaining test and what high or low result mean.

labtestsonline.org.uk/tests...

It confirms what you dr said about (FSH & LH) hormones rising. Although oestrogen declines.

Do you currently take any supplements? Eg vitamin D taken on day of test can falsely raise the level.

Biotin can interfere with some tests. It’s not very predictable as it’s to do with testing process, so it can affect a number of test. So should be left off at least a few days before any blood test. Longer for higher doses.

Great , thank you sooo much Wish drs would go through them like you do to reassure us , she just skimmed over it . So wat dosage of folate and b12 do I go for plz x

Might just add “sorry if going on but I did take folic acid 5mg back in Jan “ then dr said around March “o come off them u don’t need them “

And I was taking vit d spray “better u “ 3000 iu but stoped in may as run out as weather was warming up x

Stagbettle9876 profile image
Stagbettle9876

I used to take vit d , but stopped couple months ago , I do get dizzy head a lot and like a unbalanced feeling when walking , and yeah I do get breathless Omg thank u soo much

So I am bit confused , so I need folate ? And b12 ?

I was on folic acid for months but drs told me to come off it .

So do I start the vit d again I have “better u” 3000iu it’s a spray

So I have vit d in cupboard

No other vits

Can can help me with wat folate to take and b12 as have no clue x

I do take diazapam as I have anxiety , so hope this doesn’t effect anything x

Would appreciate wat I need to buy

Xxx

The red better u spray is good as it contains K2. A co factor which directs calcium to teeth & bones where you want it and away from blood vessels where you don’t.

If you stopped it’s likely to fall, even over the warmer summer (unless your sunbathing in bikini all day).

So I would maintain the spray - (3 daily sprays winter - 1 daily spray throughout summer).

It’s difficult to say which B doses you need. Most over the counter options will vary slightly in the Bs which are include and the doses. Most include the main Bs and there will be a safe limit which won’t be exceeded.

Shop around to compare and find one you like. Thornes basic B & pure encapsulations are often recommended on thyroid forum.

Taking a complex keeps them in balance even if 1 is acceptable and 1 is deficient. Only Increasing the deficient 1 might unbalance the others.

Doctors just look for in range levels and then say ok, you don’t need to carry on supplements, but if they don’t recheck levels which they often don’t, how do they really know?

Supplements shouldn’t affect your medication. For best absorption take apart from each other.

I missed your post about your viral illness and antibiotics. - often illness starts as viral but once there is swelling & redness that can often be bacterial infection.

A mild infection can often resolve itself but if it persists for more than a few days or becomes severe antibiotic can help heal & recover quicker.

Were you given advice how to help it. Paracetamol for temperature & pain relief or Ibroprofen which can be better with inflamed areas.

You can alternate doses of paracetamol ibroprofen provided you do not exceed the maximum dose of either within 24 hours. Take lowest dose to manage.

drink plenty of water

eat cool / soft foods

avoid smoking or smoky places

Rest.

Use medicated lozenges (some contain anaesthetic, antiseptic, or anti-inflammatory properties)

A anaesthetic spray can help but will not treat underlying issue.

You can also gargle with cooled boiled water & salt. (Years ago - doctors recommended you gargle & spit out, dispersible aspirin). The advice is now to use salt.

Are these ones ok ?

Good
PurpleNails profile image
PurpleNails in reply toStagbettle9876

Yes they are good. They do include biotin. I take biotin. Just remember if you have a blood draw scheduled leave them off - 3 days should be ok. Biotin can interfere with some blood tests

O sorry again just to add , dr said get over the counter antihistamine but I read they can interact with diazapam as I take around 6 mg a day , she mentioned one but can’t remember the name “starts with a “L “ x

PurpleNails profile image
PurpleNails in reply toStagbettle9876

Loratadine? Ask pharmacist for advice. Doctors consult them with regards to medicines as they know more about prescribing and interactions than doctors. They are very knowledgeable and usually more helpful. Ill be back later to reply on your other part.

Thank you so much , yes I have the better u spray (vitd k2 ) 3000iu So one spray ? A day ?

Re my virus , yes it started tues , woke up feeling awful , dizzy , red swollen back of throat and swollen glands , dr saw me as I was in a state of panic ! She said it’s a viral infection as no white pus was seen or spots , so she said take pain relief and and antihistamines , as I have been suffering with hayfever symptoms last few yrs , mostly , sore heavy eyes , dizzy head , blocked and runny nose , . I worry bout my unbalanced feeling when walking , or if I look up or down I get a dizzy sensation , and if I brush my teeth and look down or up I go wobbly , really hard to explain . Have also neck pain and stomach issues , I just feel so unwell or lacking in something . I went to drs bout my balance issues and dizzy head and eyes and he looked in my ears and said “no ears are ok “ and he prescribed me bestamine tabs for vertigo but they didn’t work and gave me sicky tummy . What you said bout breathing issues , yes I feel exhausted even cleaning etc and tired yet my sleep is awful , wake 5 am in panic . Just feel I have so many issues . They refered me to m/h team and all they did was to try get me of diazapam, but I am so anxious 24:7 I can’t cope without . I just feel since 3 yrs ago 47 yr old , my health and m/h has declined xxx

Sorry just so lonely not being able to share I feel inside . I hate even going out house now .

Everything just scares me , that’s y I asked dr to do bloods as “u know ur own body don’t we “ and u know if ur not right . Xxx

Better you spray bottles recommends 3 sprays as standard but if your levels are ok 1 spray during summer should be good.

Your virus does sound terrible. Are the pain relief and antihistamines helping?

Has the doctor offered an alternative to Betahistine? which made you sick. They are alternatives.

Your anxiety sounds severe & it sounds like it’s started with health issues - the balance neck & stomach issues?

What tends to happen is doctors test to rule out serious / standard issues & they come back ok they are happy you have a temporary not serious issue which will resolve.

When they don’t resolve they assume mental health. Once diagnosed with a condition wether it’s mental health or other longterm physical conditions, GPs automatically put all symptoms down to the existing issue rather than investigate further especially if there are a collection of unspecific symptoms which do not have a easy & obvious answer.

As you said you know you are not right. I wouldn’t give up looking for answers & seeking help. Anxiety is likely contributing & worsening existing symptoms.

Such as your panic to being unwell with your virus & existing hay fever & existing anxiety.

Do you have family & friends to support you?

The doctor should also be able to give you information about seeking well being support, some can be done online or other resources like mindfulness programmes.

Health unlocked have some anxiety / stress forums you can join. They may be of help.

Yess you hit nail on head , on all above said . Can’t thank you enough

I have ordered the b vits (thorns ) and I take I spray of vit d as u said too . Yes my virus is a touch better , but still their , but not sure if it’s allergies too connected .

Re balance issues , dr never offered another type of vertigo tablet !

I think majority of my issues is anxiety , as suffered since I was in school aged around 11yrs old . And it flared up in my late 20s , was put on antidepressants and they did the job , but 3 yrs ago out of blue had a panic attack ! Drs told me that antidepressants can stop working , so from then it went downhill , the took me off citapram 40 mg and put me on sertraline,, which was horrendous so I was given diazapam, and that did the trick but unfortunately I got hooked on them untill the the present day .

But all this started as my periods were changing too , so it was prob peri menopause on its way .

I watched so many vids of menopause and anxiety symptoms , both are similar .

But I will carry on persisting with drs for answers , but tbh my faith in them are not great .

O one more thing lol .. dr prescribed me antibiotics with penicillin in them . But she said only take if u don’t get well . So my virus came on tues just gone , and I am still not right with throat and croaky voice , and bunged up nose and headache . So how do I know if it’s viral still or gone to baterial , as don’t want to take them unnecessary as they won’t work with a viral . ?

Don’t know if should start them or wait it out ?

Sorry long message but I have been grt x

Can’t thank u enough for your kind support x

- if you don’t improve - did doctor give you a time guide?

If this was Tuesday I’d say start them if not recovering by Sunday (5 days). Always falls on weekend doesn’t it?

Are you feeling better or worse? If better today re access Monday. If feeling same or worse collect prescription today & start over weekend.

Once you start a course of antibiotics always complete (you likely know this).

Ive seen balance app recommended for tracking menopause symptoms that might be helpful.

& NHS website have tips & tools for coping with stress & anxiety.

When I had sleeping trouble I looked at the advice & I found it helpful to read & relearn & remind myself of the basics. Some of it may seem obvious advice but you might find a bit of advice which makes a big difference.
