Been on statins for many years yet despite a careful diet my cholesterol was still high. Saw a specialist (lipids) who prescribed metformin (very low dose) because although not diabetic I am in a pre-diabetic stage (diabetes may never kick in if I maintain a suitable lifestyle). A combination of this and statins (which I will be looking to reduce) brought down my cholesterol, for the first time in 30 years, to a healthy level of 4.9.
