10.7 g of sugar !!, yes I agree its scandalous that Heart UK would approve such a product. Buy plain porridge which has virtually no sugar. With the BHF getting behind Warburtons and Heart UK approving sugar laden food products is there any hope
This is not new news but I am pleased to see it become more main stream.
It has been known that inflammation has been the cause of a lot of disease for many decades, especially plaque in the arteries. Hence the Paleo diet - it is thought that the main causes of inflammatory disease such as blocked arteries and autoimmune diseas is 1. Dairy as we are unable to digest lactose in milk beyond the age of 4 years and 2. Gluten found in cereals, especially bread, especially white sliced bread. Sugar may be a contender but if you use no added sugar of any sort and eat lots of fibre with natural foods heavy in sugar ie - fruit, as with fatty foods, you will limit the damage.
Google the Paleo diet for a guide of how to eat for health. Up to you how rigid you are but an excellent guide to healthy eating.
Unfortunately, although oats are excellent for reducing cholesterol, they are also very high in gluten so if you are intolerant or on the Paleo diet as I am, no good.....
Also avoid any product with maize starch, an amazing nos of products, especially in US have this as an ingredient, and personally anything with cornflour.
What is wrong with good old fashioned rolled oats if you want to eat oats? Soak them overnight with water with a little salt, not milk, cook in the morning - takes no more than 5 mins - add a few sultanas for sweetening - great breakfast.
If you need advice see a nutritionist not a dietician or just research....plenty of information. My rule is always - read the ingredients on every food you buy, never buy any processed food, never buy anything with more than 5 ingredients including sauces, know what you react with by keeping a very accurate food diary.
Think nature first so eat natural, organic foods with no pesticide use. Always cook from scratch. No dairy at all, no gluten and as little sugar as possible. Lots of fibre, green leafy veg.
There have been quite a few studies that show that apples have a very good record for lowering cholesterol, but only with the skins on as the polyphenols which are the active element are present in high quantities in the skin or just below.
It is hard but you do need to do the wor to get the results. I also think we all need encouragement so keep posting and let us know how you get on.
