Facial disfigurement
Hi there and welcome to the community. I'm sorry to hear about the insecurity you're experiencing as a result of your appearance. What you've described sounds like concerns with your facial symmetry. There are others who have expressed similar concerns on the forum and you might find reading through some of the posts and responses helpful. A search on the site for "asymmetrical face" might prove helpful. You might also decide to speak with your doctor. Here at Changing Faces we use the term ‘disfigurement’ to mean any condition, mark or scar that affects the appearance of a person’s face, hands or body. There are many causes of disfigurement some of which are present at birth such as birthmarks and cranio-facial conditions but most are acquired during life including scarring from accidents, skin conditions like psoriasis and acne, facial and skin cancer, and after a stroke or a Bell’s palsy.Take care.
The effect in photos is unsettling because it ISN’T MIRROR IMAGE like when you look at yourself in a mirror.
Our mind automatically adjusts for the asymmetry, so when we see a photo that ISN’T mirror image, we get a double whammy. It looks TWICE as big or small as we’re used to.
Most people don’t even notice asymmetry in other people.
