Pneumonia , elderly dad

Hello,So happy to find you.

My brother and I are sharing the care of our 88 yr old Dad. Beginning of year he was in hospital with pneumonia, he stayed a week.

He was discharged 3 weeks ago with a walking frame, which he didn't need before, but as no one has reassessed him, it seems he is relying on it.

The main issue is that he has lost his appetite, and often complains of a bad taste in his mouth. We were wondering if anyone had any similar problems after discharge, and may have any advice for us going forward. Dad was very independent before hospital.

Just some questions. Does he still have a cough? If so, he may need further oral antibiotics. He has been on antibiotics for a week which also kill the good gut bacteria, so will also need to be taking probiotics to revive the good gut bacteria.

Medicines can cause a bad taste in the mouth but so can many other things. Check with the doctor. Google the causes of a bad taste in the mouth so that you are prepared when seeing the doctor.

Lack of appetite can be caused by many things. Is he still sick? Is he tired? He is constipated and or bloated?

While he has lost his appetite, it may help to give him a nutritional supplement drink such as Sustagen (There are many others) Small snacks throughout the day might also help. Once again the doctor may direct you to a nutritionist.

After 1 week in hospital - particularly at his age - he is probably very weakened. Keep him with the walker until he feels ready to put it aside. However muscles need to be restrengthened so ask the doctor or a physio for daily, simple exercises that will help him to regain his strength - arms, legs and lungs. It is vitally important to keep him active.
