RISE ABOVE AND GAIN A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Welcome back to Feel Good Friday, how are you all doing?

Sometimes it helps to rise above our situations and gain a new perspective. I learned a valuable lesson on Christmas Day. Like many of you, we had family guests coming, and at the last minute they forgot what they were supposed to make to contribute to the meal, turned up later than arranged and I was getting stressed that the food would be spoiled. Before they came I asked my hubby what I should do, and he said that I could choose to have a good Christmas regardless of how my family was behaving. Initially, I was a bit B-minded and said yes I would not let them spoil my Christmas. But once I calmed down, I chose to be more positive and loving in my response and chose to be generous in my attitude towards them. By the time they arrived, I had a big smile on my face, joyful Christmas music playing, handed them a glass of mulled wine, and welcomed them in, ignoring the challenges. By changing my attitude and choosing to have a good time and to chill out more, it positively improved the mood of the whole day. It was one of the most relaxed and happy Christmas days we’ve had for a long time.

Sometimes it isn’t easy to rise above the day to day challenges we face, and we can feel like we have no control over circumstances. But in psychology, there is a term called having a ‘locus of control’. This can be external factors e.g. people, situations or internal factors e.g. our choices, feelings, thoughts etc. Many times we feel that our situation can’t change because we blame or feel controlled by external factors, but often we need to take back control internally and make small but significant internal choices to change. We can rise above and gain a new perspective, which may change the atmosphere, situation or how others respond to us.

Do share with us how your week has gone. Keep in touch with us we are listening.

Have a great weekend.

Hi MAS_Nurse.

Look out, here it is again; another Friday!

I have a book I've made for myself in which I record any inspirational saying that takes my fancy, and, only a few weeks ago, a friend suggested a very short one. 'Attitude changes everything.' And it instantly earned itself a place in my book. So I do understand what you mean about choosing to rise above difficulties.

And I'm really happy this week that my sister has chosen to do just that.

Several months back I posted one of my worries, which has been her denial of my brother-in-law's suspected early dementia. She had even said that she had brought it up with her husband's GP previously. But this week she's confessed that she hadn't done that! But now she's found the strength to rise above her fears for him and is off to the doctor with him to discuss, and get tests. I'm so relieved, I can't begin to tell you.

But I agree that it's not always easy to do, and most often, you do have to choose to do it. Sometimes it takes a lot of strength and courage, but usually after you've climbed that mountain and looked back at the view, you are so glad you made the effort.

I hope that you and all of our dedicated group have a good weekend, in whatever way they can.

I do agree with your post MAS_Nurse and we do sometimes need to rise above things. Christmas can be a stressful time at best but when people are late, it can make things worse. I have had to smile and change my attitude on several occasions and it’s always been the right thing to do.

Had a better week because Pete is improving slowly. Sepsis is a terrible infection and people need to be aware of how to spot it. I have joined the UK Sepsis trust.

Stay safe everyone and have a good weekend. Xxxxxxx
