My husband has vascular dementia, bowel cancer and enlarged prostate, with a catheter

my main problem is the change in his personality and mood swings anxiety attacks and total

dependency on me. Is there any medication available to calm him down?

his mental health team are loath to prescribe anything as it may make him sleepy and prone to falls. any suggestions?

the previous post on here (from FamilyTree64) was very similar to yours. As I told her, you need to make your doctor understand how it is affecting you. My husband has dementia and cancer too and life is not easy. He is on a low dose anti-depressant which seems to help a little and I do stand up for myself when his temper gets too bad. Just walk away and refuse to deal with him if he becomes too bad. People with dementia don't realise how their behaviour affects those around them.

Hello loistoni,

Welcome to this very supportive community. You sound like you are going through a really difficult time at the moment. I concur with 'exhaustedwife' that you need to have a frank discussion with your GP about his mood swings and how caring for him is affecting your health. We cannot advise about specific medications here, as this is an anonymous, online forum and the opinions given are from members are drawn from personal experience, and you need professional medical advice. Here a few links to websites that I hope you may find helpful to give you support and advice:

As you have seen, folks here really care, empathise and know how you feel.

Do look after yourself and take care. Keep in touch. :-)
