I'm new here, I have health problems of my own but just want advice on how to care for an elderly relative to the best of my ability without putting my health at risk.

audrey21 -- You are wise to give priority to your own health. Being a caregiver is very stressful. Tell us more about yourself, the person you are caring for and whether you are caring for them in their home or someplace else. You will find good guidance here.

Hello Audrey

I'm pleased to here you are also thinking of yourself in this scenario. Often carers put their own needs to the side which isn't good for anyone. You have to look after yourself to be able to look after your relative

Firstly, it is understanding a little more about your situation and whether your relative is nearby or at a distance from you. Are there others who are able to assist? What level of care

I do recommend setting some clear boundaries with your relative. This may sound a little harsh but is wise to do at the start where you can. This will help keep it sustainable

Social services are a point of contact for you to have an assessment of your relatives needs as well as your own

Look for carer support groups - this will provide a good place to share experiences and get some good advice

I hope this helps a little and this forum is a good place to ask for support from others in your situation

You are very wise to think of yourself but, from my own experience, this is so difficult to do. My father has recently had numerous health crises and I have ended up putting him in a Care Home (with no help from Social Services as he is self-funding). I am finding it almost impossible to adequately think of my own needs but it is so important. I wish you luck.
