Hi I'm a newbie ..... Just wondering I'm looking after my dad whom will be 85 this year.... He does live on his own but I only live next door book one.... I've had to lower my hours at work to look after him.... Is there any allowance I could apply for.. As my earnings have gone down...thank you in advance xx

Contact Care for the Carers, they can help you with everything you need to know and tell you who to contact for finance, help with everything in the house, respite etc. They are very good.

Carers Allowance is the benefit paid to carers who care full time. It is a relatively small benefit. Everything about it is on here gov.uk/carers-allowance/ove.... Dad would need to be in receipt of Attendance Allowance.

You should encourage Dad to have his needs assessed by the local authority. And you can ask for your needs as a carer to be asked too.

your Dad could apply for attendance allowance - this is paid monthly and is not means tested. If he has specific medical conditions this will decide whether he gets the daily amount about £45 per week or the day and night allowance which is about £88. The form is immense but it is to help with any extra care that might be needed - check out the DWP website
