Hi all

My GP has prescribed Betahistine for my T. I'm always hesitant to take new drugs and have never heard of any medication helping tinnitus. Has anyone here had experience with this drug? It says it's for Menier's which i don't have

Am3ient, are you in the UK? If so, your doc shouldn’t really be prescribing this.I think doctors used to, and there may well be a reason why yours does. But. Do you know the National Institute for Clinical Excellence? (NICE) ? It specifically says not to prescribe this. You can look it up yourself on NICE by putting ‘tinnitus’ into their search box.

I don’t think it would harm you!

There is NO magic pill for tinnitus other than the famed dragons blood which I expect you can find advertised. NB this is a joke! Don’t believe any ads. Go to the British tinnitus Association website and have a look at all the possible things could buy, and their take on it.

Hi Rosie

Yes I'm in the UK. I was super skeptical when he prescribed it to me to be honest and even double checked with him on what it's specifically for and he said it was for the tinnitus.

Im in a place where I'm desperate to try anything but I certainly don't want to exacerbate my symptoms or add others.

I'll head over to the NICE website and read up on it now. Thank you so much for the Info, Rosie.

My doctor prescribed me Acamprosate 333mg and gaba 1000mg, both three times a day. There are clinical trials vs placebo that recognize an improvement in severity of the symptoms described by the patients. Search in the web. Sorry for my English🙏

Hi the BTA does NOT recommend Betahistine for T. However my GP prescribed them to me whilst I wait for my ENT appointment. They have helped with the severity of my T, making it more high pitched and in the background. But they have caused significant liver pain so I have to take daily Milk Thistle to counteract this. In addition, 2 tablets a day gave me daily migraine, so I can only tolerate 1. They are NOT a long term solution. My ENT appointment is March 22nd.

Hope the above helps x

Hi Am3ient,

Tinnitus is annoying and can be very troublesome. It’s interesting to know that your GP prescribed you Betahistine for Tinnitus. My GP prescribed this for me, although I have Tinnitus, I have an associated problem with odd dizzy moments. So the Betahistine doesn’t work to control the Tinnitus, it’s been used to control these dizzy moments. It has helped a little although I am getting some side affects from this medication or it’s interacting with other medication I’m taking for another condition. I don’t know. I have to go back to the GP, when I can get an appointment!

The advice given here and indeed to all of us is a good one. As a result I’ve looked at British Tinnitus Association and NICE and it has some very useful information and methods to help with Tinnitus. There isn’t a cure for it, but you can try different methods to mask it. I got myself a device that plays various sounds to mask the Tinnitus and help you relax and most importantly to get some sleep. It’s helping me to cope with it better, but different things for different folk.

The other point is, go back to your GP armed with information and ask for a referral to ENT support. That’s my next move and also to review this medication I’ve been on the last couple of weeks. I hope you get the support you need eventually. Good luck.

Hi, I was prescribed Betahistine when I first got T but I also had vertigo (BBPV) when I had my inner ear event that caused my T. It had no effect on mt T (or for that matter my vertigo). Here is a good link on Betahistine on the BTA website tinnitus.org.uk/betahistine...

Stay safe

I suppose anything is worth a try but I have not resorted to any medication so far.

Betahistine is almost exclusively prescribed for Meniere's Disease...and possibly a few other inner ear diseases that affect the vestibular system and cause dizziness. It's curious that your doctor prescribed it for tinnitus. I have bilateral MD and take 64mg of betahistine/day. It has stopped the vertigo for the past 5 years. Not one episode. It has done nothing to lessen the tinnitus

Hi! I have been taking Betaserc , that’s the Romanian Serc , for many years.I have T, no vertigo, no Meniere disease.

It hasn’t curedT, but I can cope with it.

If at the beginning I used to take it from time to time, now I take 24-mg twice daily.

I interrupt the treatment at least for a month, but I don’t feel comfortable without it.

Good health!
