Covid-19 Vaccine and Tinnitus

Hi All,

As with many members of this forum I am extremely apprehensive about taking the covid-19 vaccine due to the fact that it may worsen my tinnitus.

I developed tinnitus 10 months ago and as with my people on this forum it crippled me. I cried every single day for at least 2 months. I often thought that if the tinnitus didn't improve that the only option available would be the worst one possible.

Fast forward 10 months and I still l have constant 24/7 tinnitus but it is manageable. I am happy again and do not experience any spikes as a result of food or alcohol. The tinnitus is still loud but does not disturb my sleep.

I still feel like I have the potential to make further improvements and that is why the vaccine scares me as much as I am in favor of it. I have a 5 month old son and in my darkest moments I thought I would not experience the joys of holding him in my arms.

My question is for whether the vaccine response may be associated with your level of Tinnitus before taking the shot. I am aware many tinnitus sufferers have taken the shot without any negative reaction but perhaps they suffer from mild tinnitus.

Has anyone with severe 10/10 tinnitus taken the vaccines and observed no difference in their tinnitus.

Thank you in advance and to all those who suffer keep your heads up and know that things can get a lot better.

As an additional thought, I wonder if the type of tinnitus you have can also affect your response. My tinnitus was stress/anxiety induced. As a result the doctors cannot find any damage with my ears and say the tinnitus is a result of the brain sending incorrect signals to my ears.

That being said, is it possible that any potential spike in tinnitus caused by the vaccine and resulting inflammation may be temporary once the inflammation subsides?

Hello guestmember. You’re well on the way to coping with T when you know it can be exacerbated by stress etc. Well done. There are many posts here about the effects of vaccine on T and some well researched information within the British tinnitus Association website. Have a read of these posts and the website. If you’re still worried about vaccine why not ring the BTA website? The people there are knowledgeable and caring.

Hello there. It sounds like you're doing really well only 10 months in. I'm so glad you can enjoy life again - especially as a new mum. At 14 months in and still adjusting to life with loud T I've opted not to have the vaccine at the moment - even though I'm in favour of it . It's a very tricky decision with risks either way and not one I've taken lightly. Sorry I can't answer any of your questions.

Thank you for your response doglover1973 . Its a difficult and very personal decision and I wish you the best. I think what a lot of people do not realize is that for many tinnitus suffers who are living on the edge, the idea of their tinnitus getting any worse is just as bad as a the idea of catching the delta virus and not surviving.

With that being said I once didn't believe things could get better but they can and if your tinnitus was once mild then I believe that one day it will return to its mild level. Stay safe.

Kind Regards.

You’ve summed it up perfectly in your first paragraph. I wish you all the best in making the right decision for you.

I do hope you decide to have the vaccine because this Covid 19 virus is a vicious illness and you could end up suffering terribly and the fact that you have a little 5 month old baby to look after and love, says it all . However it’s your life and your decision , of course. 😊

Hi. I too have opted not to have the vaccine for fear that it will worsen my tinnitus. I have pulsatile tinnitus which I have had for 4.5 years and it causes me huge anxiety as I am aware of what my heart is doing 24/7. I have read somewhere on another tinnitus forum that there over 10000 known cases of tinnitus worsening or being caused by the vaccine. There is just not enough known about the vaccine and long term effects of it so I am not comfortable with having it. It also has upset several friends menstrual cycles and as I am going through perimenopause again I don't wa t it causing further issues there. Just my own opinions and thoughts though.

Hello, I have severe tinnitus, I’ve had it for about 20 years. I’ve had two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. I’ve had no ill effects whatsoever. Not one side effect. I’ve heard of people who have had Covid ending up with tinnitus and some going completely deaf. There’s a lot of nonsense spread about the vaccine from assorted nutters. At the end of the day it’s your choice, you can have the vaccine and still catch Covid. If you keep away from people and lead a quiet life you may be lucky, and get away without the vaccine, but winters coming and infection rates are heading up again.

The Vaccine has made no difference to my tinnitus.

I would say that I believe that the stress and anxiety around the pandemic has made it worse.

The Vaccine helps with this in that being protected against dying from covid is a big relief which has brought down my stress levels.

I have 24/7 tinnitus - for 2 years nowDidn’t hesitate with vaccine. Would rather be alive with tinnitus then dead. I had 2 of the Pfizer. Hope this helps.

Sorry should have added, no reaction to first shot, sore arm for a couple of days with second. No effect on tinnitus with either.

Hi guestmember,

I was just like you, got tinnitus in February and when you are new to it you are so desperate to not make it worse, so you’re not exactly rushing to get vaccinated. I got my first shot of phizer finally 3 weeks ago and happy to say that despite some arm pain I was totally fine and tinnitus did not get worse (or improve!) and that’s what’s important for you to know, that there should be no correlation whatsoever. However because ones mood is so affected with tinnitus it’s important that YOU feel somewhat okay before taking the shot and you should not feel pressured by anyone to do it if you’re not feeling ready. I see a lot of people in these threads making comments to unvaccinated people which makes me infuriated. Do your research, get better and when you’re ready the vaccine can be taken any day at a clinic near you.

Best,

Alex

I have had tinnitus for about 7 months. Got it after having Covid in February. Ents cant agree . One thinks it is a result of the covid virus another says that my audiogram indicates that its because of acustic trauma. So i dont know. Anyway . After having lots of doubts i had the pfizer jab 2 weeks ago. I inly need 1 since i had Covid apparently. I live in Spain. At first i thought it had gotten worse but now im not so sure. I have a bit of anxiety having started work again . Secundary school teacher!! I dont think it has really affected my T . I am like you completely on the edge at times . My two children give me a reason to hang in there. Hopefully things van improve. They measured my T to around 30-35 db so its intrusive.. Good luck with whatever youndecide to do.

Hi sveinp,Can I please ask you how do they measure your db levels of tinnitus. I didn’t know about being able to test the sound level of tinnitus .

Penny. 😊

It was in a private hospital in Pamplona. First they located the frequency of my tinnitus. Aroun 4000hz. Then in a sound proof booth they turned up the sound of that frecuencyand i had to signal when i thought it was about how i perceive it. 35 db is very loud so they were surprised . I was tense and nervous so it might be that it wasnt 100 % exact.

I'm in a similar situation as yourself. I've had tinnitus since 2019 both ringing and pulsatile accompanied by mild vertigo. I'm really nervous to get vaccinated for two reasons, I'm still working with my ENT to figure what's causing the tinnitus and secondly if it was to get worse than it is now I'm not sure how well I would handle it. I feel like an ass around my family and friends knowing that they're aware that I'm unvaccinated and am overall stressed about what i to do. It is comforting to know that some of you that have "T" have also received your second dose without any additional complications. I don't want my tinnitus to get worse and I don't want to catch covid and die either. anyway keep safe everyone.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. There's days where I'm adamant I'm going to get the vaccine but then i totally change my mind in complete fear that it will make my tinnitus worse😥! I really wish i didn't read any comments on how it effects Tinnitus because I would of got it by now🙄! The frustrating thing is I know that I would feel alot better (anxiety wise) knowing I was vaccinated and protected but i just can't seem to bring myself to get it😥

I have this terrible disease since 2019, I went to many doctors, I came to South Korea for a treatment with PRP that resulted in a fraud of 20 thousand dollars, however I later met an excellent doctor from India who gave me a treatment that It has not cured me but it even allows me to live a life although not so miserable, and he told me that the vaccine is a risk and you have to take it by taking great precautions of reinforcement before applying it, but you have to consider that tinnitus is very likely that in many cases it has a viral origin that the Korean doctor of the prp affirmed. In other words, in general flu viruses, herpes and covid can trigger this terrible disease of tiinitus.

They already know a lot of exercise, no sugar or carbohydrates, feeding of animal organs, and avoid sweeteners aspartame, monosodium glutamate, stevia, calming drugs in general, aspirin, foods with salicylates

Hi Guestmember just wondering how your feeling now with all the comments below? I'm in the same position as you and its so exhausting trying to figure out the right thing to do😥. I'm just fearful that the vaccination will make my T worse as I don't think I'd be able to cope if it does as its quite severe already. God i wish i had a crystal ball right now or for someone else to make my decision x

Hi, Guestmember,

I've had tinnitus for six years and counting. I've had both Astra Zeneca jabs. A few hours after the first I experienced the oft-recorded fatigue and flu-like symptoms for a while but no reaction after the second jab. Equally importantly neither jab affected my tinnitus.

The process was quick and painless and gave me lot of comfort to know that I have some protection from this awful virus.

The choice is yours and I trust you'll make the right decision for yourself.

I just wish there was a vaccine for tinnitus!

Respectfully submitted,

Keoni

Hi Guestmember, I have had the vaccine as well as contracting covid. I echo what has been said by others, that tinnitus can be related to stress levels in our bodies. Looking at my vaccine journey- yes it did spike after I was injected with my 2nd dose but it has calmed down. I put this spike down to being ill with Long Covid, my poor body is currently and constantly in a state of inflammation. Over the years of having tinnitus spikes, they occur when my body has been under stress. The vaccines do state that tinnitus may be a side effect. All I can say is I have been living with this condition for many years and the tinnitus post-vaccine was no worse than I had experienced in other situations. The BTA website has great info, so definitely go on there. I found the leaflets- All about Tinnitus and Taming Tinnitus really helpful- better later than never. I feel I understand why it spikes now. All the best in your journey.

I had my first Pfizer vaccine on Monday - I too hesitated as I didn’t want it to make my fairly mild tinnitus worse but I had a big holiday booked since 2019 and you just can’t travel without it. Sadly, three days later mine is really spiking and has turned into a really high pitched whine like a a faulty plug socket and I can’t block it out whatever I try. I hope it dies down but if it doesn’t I am going to ask the doctor to make me exempt from the next one as I really can’t risk it getting worse as at the moment I am having trouble hearing the TV.

I am desperately trying not to panic but I’m really wishing I hadn’t got it now and I think I’d rather have taken the thousands of pound hit than this.
