Just joined in the hope of finding some support. I have had tinnitus for the last five months, was learning to live with it and didn’t bother me too much. It’s suddenly got much louder. Is habituation likely to happen?

Briefly, Barnabas : YES ! Your brain should habituate. The “less you think about it, the quicker it will be be” seems to be the rule.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

Thanks Happyrosie that’s good to know. I want to avoid the temptation to fight the tinnitus and come to a place of acceptance but know it’s not going to be easy.

Hi Barnabus I’m in the same situation I’m about 5 months into the condition myself, mine is loud noise induced tinnitus.

At first I did try to fight it with some success. I tried hypnotherapy, acupuncture, cold therapy, sound therapy, diet changes, supplements, meditation.

I find accepting the condition and trying to understand it and live alongside it is the best way to go. I was hoping for a magic cure out there for me but I know that’s highly unlikely so acceptance I may have this for life is incredibly difficult but also an important step moving forward.

If I’m emotional or stressed I have spikes and it’s tough when it gets loud after a few days of quieter tinnitus.

I just use the things that work for me like a nice hot bath before bed and sound therapy.

Tinnitus is a horrible condition and I find people don’t understand what sufferers go through but habituation is possible. I watch tv and mentally block it, push it to the back of my mind and try and live my life as it’s part of my life now.

Also I’m thankful for my sight and use of limbs, friends and family who support me. And also the information and people on this website is priceless. We’re all in this together and we’ll get through it together.

You’re not alone brother

Hope it settles back down for you (which it will!)

Ross

Hi Ross

Thanks for the encouraging words. Knowing we are not alone with this condition is so helpful and comforting.

I too habituated (for many years) then had a sudden spike over the summer after a blocked ear. It’s very demoralising after getting used to it for so long to then go back to it playing on your mind all the time. I’m still not habituated again yet but it’s bothering me less and the saving grace is I know it’s possible, as do you. So be assured it’ll happen, not today nor tomorrow but some day it’ll be like it never happened
