Suggestions on Staph?

Having a wobble with staph infections. Since Covid in January I had this and a staph aureus infection together and the staph is not shifting despite multiple oral antibiotics. It’s clears and one week later it’s back. I feel dreadful with pain in-usual places. Any suggestions on meds? It’s my nemesis this (and pseudomonas but fortunately on Colomycin) I last had Meropenam around 10 months ago and it seemed successful. I’ve an appointment soon so will see what they say.

Thank you for listening to the moans here…!

Hi Anie

Have had bronchiectasis in a mild form for at least forty years. The last fifteen years I have suffered repeated infections with Staph. aureus in my sputum (phlegm). These last few years have led to a slight decline in my pulmonary(lung) function due to the infections.

In the beginning treatment was with Fluoxacillin 1gram three times a day fortnightly. The infection has become more persistent and as I am fortunate enough to always respond to Fluoxacillin (sputum cultre preceeding treatment) I am now on three month period treatments with Fluoxacillin 1gram two times a day. When on this regimen I am more or less free of symptoms apart from a slight rather dry cough. The treatment is repeated two to three times a year but sofar no side effects of the treatment. I am living in Sweden.

I am so glad you are well on this regime. Fluoxacillin has helped but the infection has come back within 10 days each time. It’s been prominent since January. My latest treatment has taken form of IVs in which I had been taken in for two weeks I had felt quite poorly and the rest was quite a relief. Piperacillin and tazobactum may have finally worked and my fingers are crossed. It’s been explained that maybe two infections were the cause and staph was one. Thank you for your contribution it was very helpful.

I do hope that you will find relief from your latest treatment. Strange that your sputum cultures did not reveal other culprits apart from Staph. aureus. I always test positive for the bacteria but have few symptoms until the concentration increases (confirmed by sputum cultures). Low concentrations seem not to require active antibiotic treatment. I take long walks with the dog and potter around in the garden as a form of daily exercise. Going up and down the stairs in the house is also a good way to try and keep a reasonably good lung function. Cold air seems to provoke infections as did COVID vaccinations. Hope will keep well.

from your post I am not sure if or where you have it. If face or nose, I suggest an ent. Mine was bad and the sinus surgery has cleared it along with twice daily sinus rinse with bendoaonide
