Nasal probs

Suddenly this week I’ve started with lots of mucus gathering at the back of my nose that doesn’t seem to want to move, it’s driving me mad!

Has anyone else had this and what can I do to try and clear it! 😩

Hi Dawnsunny, I have had a similar problem, mainly during the night or first thing in the morning. it doesn't cause me any great distress as such, but is a bit irritating. I find a sort of big 'snort' from the back of my throat helps it come away. A bit disgusting, I know, especially in company or public but it seems to work. Not sure if this helps you.

Thank you Ceejay65, I tried to do this all yesterday, sometimes it worked a little bit the majority it didn’t.

It really is irritating. I’ve heard others talk of a nasal drip. Not sure what that is, but wondered if I’m getting this?

😖

Hi

Have you tried neilmed nasal rinse? You shoot the solution up one nostril and the gunk comes out the other with the solution. You can buy it online or at a chemist. You should try to clear it otherwise it can drop down your throat and onto your lungs and we all know what happens then! I think this is what you are referring to as post nasal drip. Good luck.

Thank you Mooka, not looking forward to trying that 😣.

Thought if it slipped down your throat it goes into your stomach?

Yes, it does go into your stomach, you'd choke pretty violently if it tried to get down your windpipe.

How does it get into your lungs from your nose? Sorry if this is a silly question 😞

Hi Dawnsunny, I assume you’re asking Mooka. As I’ve said, I agree with you in that it goes into your stomach, not your lungs.

TBH you do get used to it. I am immune suppressed so if I have a sinus or chest infection both are infected as the two are connected. It’s horrible when you first do it but it does work.

If you go for it make your own solution of half salt half bicarbonate of soda as per Nhs site.

I've found that nasal issues accompany my bronch. I use saline spray in the morning and before bed (more often, if needed). Helps get the gunk out.

Where would I get a saline spray ? Is it something I can just ask for from the chemist?

They aren’t the same but the company does make a saline spray too. I have suffered from sinusitis for years as result of Vasculitis and my ENT doctor insists I use it. At the moment I use a nebuliser to try to clear my lungs and sinuses of pseudomonas and that does keep my sinuses fairly clear but I still use the neilmed.

However a steam inhale would be a good place to start. I hope it works for you.

I think I’ll try the spray first. I have Pseudomonas too 😞

Do you put anything in the water when you inhale ?

Thanks for your help 😊

I'm in California, and buy it at the pharmacy. I use Simply Saline, which is an aerosol can, but there are many varieties from Saline in plastic bottles to Neti Pot. I spray both nostrils, roll my head around and blow my nose. Hope this helps you, Dawnsunny.

Thank you for explaining, I feel relieved that it sounds easier to do than I thought ! 😊

I have a saline solution I can put into my nebuliser. I haven’t used it for a while. Maybe I’ll give it a try. Should have the same effect I guess.

Dawnsunny, I’ve just spend 10 mins on my nebuliser with a saline solution in it. It worked. It cleared my nasal gunk and also got quite a bit up from my lungs. Thanks Kpacific & Mooka. I’m guessing the neilmed spray and the saline spray are one and the same thing. My assumption is that a saline spray is the answer, good old fashioned salt and water, administered either through the type of sprays both Kpacific and Mooka mention or by a nebuliser if you have one or even just holding your head under a bowl of streaming salty water will do the trick. I suspect as Kpacific says, nasal issues and Bronchiectasis go hand in hand. I stopped using my neb a while back, didn’t feel I needed it, but will use it more frequently now. Maybe that’s been my problem (see my other thread re ‘change of symptoms’. Thanks everyone.
