Apologies for a “silly” question.

I have alcohol-related cirrhosis. I don’t drink anymore (11 months now - hospitalisation/diagnosis frightened me enough). I like to think I’ve been cautious with diet etc. and do walk and a few exercise DVDs at home. I’d like to get back to the gym (if nothing else for a change of scene!). When I used to go to the gym I was never someone who made full use of every piece of equipment and mainly treadmill with a high gradient walk or the bike - much more a pool fanatic! I’ve hesitated going back as concerned about whether the chlorine would be an issue and do any harm (I do swim with face partially under) or if I’m over thinking things?

Many thanks for reading!

There is good guidance on the BLT website about exercise and liver disease including swimming. You should be all good and it'll be good exercise for you ............. Just don't swallow the water!! britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

Thank you. There’s probably more to worry about swallowing in the pool than the chlorine!!

Even post transplant folks on immune suppression can return to swimming once their wound has healed.

Hubbie swims.s 1 mile a week! Has done since he had the energy to do it. The only thing he hates is his moobs (Sorry if too much info) caused by the water tablets and the other drugs he was on. But now dosent even care about that as he says they're a reminder that he's survived.

Thank you. Yes always a self conscious activity, I try and think everyone else too worried about their own hang ups - however love your husband’s take. Absolutely. Seems no more excuses now…

Swimming is a wonderful way to keep fit. It is also emotionally therapeutic. You appear to be doing brilliantly. Well done for 11 months sobriety, it is hard and you are doing amazing.
