Hey, hope everyone is keeping well. Just a quick question. I've had to start taking azathropine since May and was advised not to use pool due to risk of infection, I was speaking to my nurse this week and her advice was that I can't live in a bubble so I should go swimming if I want to but definitely not to use jacuzzi ( historically my favourite piece of gym equipment 😉) has anyone got any thoughts on this ? Swimming pool ?
Sammy,
I think your nurse is exactly right.
As long as you take sensible precautions that anyone would take, immuno-suppressed or not, you should be fine.
I live my life totally normally. I'm 15 months post transplant and apart form a couple of mild infections which were quickly sorted with anti-biotics, I have had no problems.
My partner was even nursed with double pneumonia for two weeks on a respiratory ward and I still visited every day. She was placed in a side room and I confess, as I was two months post op, I did wear a special "TB" grade mask on the ward. But that was an exceptional circumstance were even a non suppressed person might be tempted to wear a mask.
You shouldn't deny yourself the swimming, as exercise is so important in keeping you and your liver as healthy as possible.
Take care,
Jim
Hi Jim, thank you, your reply gives me more confidence I suspect I've become a little obsessive about the germs.
I have taken azathioprine for 9 years and have never been told to avoid pool or jacuzzi. I have used both on numerous occasions and had no infections whatsoever. My consultant told me I was no more likely to catch a cold than the next person, although I do get the yearly flu jab. Hubby has had a cold lasting for 3 weeks for the last few years and I have not caught a single one. The only thing at gym I don't use is steam room, becuase I find it difficult to breathe in them. Hope this helps
im 2.5 months post transplant. ivebeentold.... yes l can swim in pool or sea but definitely not to go on jacuzzi due to risk of bugs in small area of water... also not in a still pond or lake as still water is more of a risk for bugs.
think that if this applies to post transplant when you are immune supressed... it is probably a fairly good guide of what is sensible... everyone is different but it's finding middle ground... and not living in a bubble as the nurse said. best wishes cazer.
Hi Sam I'm post transplant 4 yrs Soon after op I was swimming using jacuzzi n steam room Have done so ever since Never felt better
Thanks everyone for such informative and positive replies I think i have become OTT about the germs. I have been missing my swimming so I'm going to dust the goggles off and head to the pool. Thanks again Samantha x

Hi Sunlower I'm heading to pool tomorrow for an aqua fit class. I've always enjoyed going to the pool but I've not been since I had to start taking azathropine in May. You're absolutely right about the exercise I love yoga and walking with my dog, I am so thankful that I'm able to do these things because there are other people on here who are not as fortunate at the minute. Thank you so much for thinking about me I'm very touched , I hope you're keeping just as well, take care Samantha x
