Hi I have been told recently 5cm of my liver has herniated through my diaphragm.
I just wondered if anyone has had experience of this and did they have surgery to rectify it. I am awaiting a surgical referral
Thanks

My husband has just seen a consultant re his hernia. He said he wouldn't operate as he has ascites and the wound wouldn't heal. He wasn't too worried about his hernia although it is huge as he said hernias rarely strangulate with ascites. So he is just going to leave it. I asked if there was anything he should avoid and he just said to avoid heavy lifting. He said he could carry on cycling which he enjoys. He didn't offer him a truss. I think there can be complications with hernia ops if you have cirrhosis as a friend of ours experienced but I guess it depends on your own health and circumstances. I hope it is not too uncomfortable and you are able to do the things you enjoy.
I had an umbilical hernia that did incarcerate my intestine. Had to have emergency surgery. Worst pain I have ever experienced. Luckily surgeon was able to save the section of intestine. It was after I was drained. I would just be careful if ascites ever dissipated. God bless.
