GGT level

Hi, I was told that in 2015 I had a fatty liver from having a scan for suspected gall stones. I wasn't told much more and no advice or follow up given.

Last year I started getting pain and a kind of tight feeling on my right side just under my lowest rib. Gp did some blood tests and said nothing came up so not to worry.

Last October I still had pain in my right side along with nausea and severe night sweats. Gp said its menopause and gave me hrt.

Roll forward to thos year February I still have all the previous symptoms but now have severe itching all over my body, along with fatigue and coldness.

My gp did blood tests and the only things to show up are my ggt level which is 70u/l and my folate is 2.9ug/l. I had the follow up chat about my bloods today and was told my ggt is only slightly raised and not to worry as it could be that I had a drink that week?..I didn't drink that week as I seldom drink at all and would know when I last had a drink. I've been given folllic acid to take and said they will test my ggt in one month. Then said if its still up I might be referred to a specialist.

Is this normal protocol?...does it matter how much the ggt is raised?..is there a difference if its 70u/l or 150u/l, does it mean I only have a little bit of a fatty liver?. Why have test parameters if they don't really take any notice of them and I've certainly not been given any advice at all.

I feel a bit in the dark.

I am not a doctor but here is a link to the GGT from medline (this is written by the United States National Library of Medicine).

As I just noted above, I am not a doctor, but, as a non-doctor it seems you should consider something else as the problem. My brother had a similar experience (pains right where you have them but normal bloods) and it turned out he just simply had to back off the spicy foods he enjoyed when he was younger, his "older self" was less tolerant of things like jalapenos and very spicy Indian food. That is anecdotal and just one person, of course but it's something to consdier. Keep working with your doctors, it will all get figured out. Keep eating well, and I hope you will be just fine.

Good luck!

I can’t say for sure, but it seems they paid attention to the elevated level of your GGT as they will check its level in a month. Indeed, GGT levels may increase in fatty liver disease even without changes in other LFT parameters. For general information: In alcohol abusers, serum GGT levels correlate with the amount of alcohol consumed. The test is especially valuable for monitoring treatment of alcoholism. Stopping alcohol intake reduces GGT activity by approximately 50% within 10 days. Taking medications can also lead to an increase in GGT. I think you mentioned taking medications prescribed by Gp to correct symptoms caused by menopause. There could be other reasons as well. In any case Gp will be able to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the elevated GGT level by comparing both indicators.
