I’ve been lurking on the site for around 7 months, since my OH was hospitalised in August and we found he had liver cirrhosis. It’s been a challenging few months and he’s been medically retired from work now.
We are trying to live life as fully as we can, within his limitations, as many of you will likely know, it does mean a lot of changes for us.
Before this our shared passion was travel - thank goodness we were very lucky and worked hard and have seen some beautiful places and met some amazing people. Now we can’t fly, but we thought we’d try a no fly cruise. Consultants happy we can do that. OH is stable, no bleeds but has jaundice. Also had a TIA discovered as part of his tests late last year.
Our existing insurance via the bank is happy to cover the TIA and diabetes - but not the cirrhosis. I’ve had some quotes from the companies listed on the BLT site - over £700 for 7 days single cover, and £2k for a years cover. I’ve had to put all of the conditions as the internet won’t let me explain we have cover for 2 of OHs health conditions.
So my question is, has anyone else had this issue? Anyone I can try that isn’t listed on the BLT site.
As an aside though d like to say thank you for everyone on here - your sharing and stories have been at my side when I’ve wanted to shout at the stars.
I’m OHs carer as well as working full time, it’s a lot but I’m grateful for him being with me still as August ls hospital stay did nearly scare the life from me!

My husband was insured through the fire brigade when he was diagnosed with cirrhosis, but we had to claim once because he was ill when we were abroad, and we couldn't get insurance at all. He's since been lucky enough to have had a liver transplant, and my bank would insure him until 2 years ago. I got a shock when I looked around too. All Clear insured him, but it cost £1500, and that's with a 20% discount. It was for a yearly policy. Just before Christmas the renewal came in at £750, but he was undergoing tests for his heart and they wouldn't insure that part. A few days later, he had a letter saying he had angina and needed an angiogram. I rang the insurance and he's now covered, but I had to pay another £750. The problem is that you can't risk going away without insurance. I tried comparison websites, but most won't give you quotes online. When my hubby was ill in Croatia it cost a lot of money because he was in hospital for 2 weeks and I had to stay in a nearby hotel, then pay for flights home when he was well enough to fly. On a cruise, you have to remember that he may have to be airlifted off the ship if he's ill, and that's expensive. I'm insured through my bank still, but I didn't think about how I'd travel back with him if he was ill. This year the sales agent asked if I wanted to be down as a companion, so I could go home with him if the worst happened.At the end of the day, life's too short, and if you can get insurance, even though it costs an arm and a leg, and you enjoy travelling, it's worth paying to enjoy your time left. Try ringing All Clear and see what they say.
Thanks for replaying - yes I think I need to actually talk to some companies and see what we can arrange. We know he can’t fly, so if I can explain that it may help too……Can’t imagine what is was like for you when he was ill abroad - 100% won’t travel without insurance.
You’re very right - we want to make the most of the time - we’ve always tried to do that but crikey this has made it even more important!

I am not sure if this company covers the medical conditions required - we have to out a lot of other types of medical conditions down and was once recommended world wide insurance
We went on an 11 week cruise last year. My transplant was stable but I had also had PTLD a few years previously and as a result need a ureta stent replacing every 6 months. In phoning around insurance companies it seemed they outsourced their medical questions to the same company or used exactly the same questionnaire. Either cover was refused or the premium was sky high. In the end I insured without pre existing conditions. We had a great time and despite the ship having numerous Covid and tummy upsets also requiring isolation, sharing a dinner table and social activities with Covid sufferers, we got neither Covid or dicky tummy. Perhaps we were lucky or took sensible precautions like not using the lifts or hand rails and not eating ashore or maybe just lucky.
Staysure is another one who cover you. I normally do single trip insurance but this time I have done annual. I have also had treated skin cancer and odds and sods' cost me £950 for the year and am I going to make the best of it. I am getting old so going for it while still fit and next year they will give me a 20% discount
