Hope everyone's keep themselves safe with this snow/ice.Just a quick question regarding high protein meal drinks. I know asking my dietitian would help but it's getting an apt.

I'm a porter at my local hospital and range around 30,000 steps a day possibly more so throughout the day.

I'm not looking to diet or lose weight I'm just wondering if between meals and the odd snack if drinking the drinks with high protein and fibre plus 27+vitamins ect would be beneficial to my health as I do have cirrhosis.

Many thanks 😍💗

Danielle

Dear DaniellaJayMay

As you have mentioned, this is a question that a dietician will be best placed to answer.

Here is a link to information about cirrhosis and diet from our website, which you may find useful for an overview

If you would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays)

Good morning to you Daniella.I myself was diagnosed with Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis in September 2021. I asked my Consultant to refer me to a Dietitian which helped me with my diet and Exercise routine. I have since been taken off the plan as I am coping well with my diet and have lost over 5 stone with healthy eating and exercise. It would be the best for you to ask your Doctor or Consultant if you have one for the best advice you need with your question about taking high fibre protein drinks etc and ask to see a Dietitian to help you further.

I hope this helps with your question and All the best for the future.

Thank you for your response 😌 I'm very pleased to hear you've been taken off your plan as you've got it under control - well done you 😁

I've pushed to see my dietitian on the 31st so I'm hopeful this will give me answers..I eat little and often all freshly cooked food as I can and drink plenty of fluids. It's just after walking so much and doing a lot of patient moves sometimes I feel I need a bit of help.

All the best to you too; sounds like your doing fab.

Good morning, I was referred to a dietician as I have decompensated Liver and was losing too much weight and muscle mass due to vomiting. I was prescribed Fortisip but it just didn’t agree with me being so rich. Having talked to a nurse who specialised in liver patients she suggested slim fast, as it’s a replacement meal it’s high protein and fibre, low in sugar and although my weight has increased my energy levels have gone up and I’m starting to exercise I’m still burning too many calories so keeping up with the slim fast. But as everyone has said speak to a dietician ( although mine was great and kept having to Google the answers to my questions lol) good luck with everything x

Hellloooo, hopefully my dietitian will give me the green light for it, I've had ensures before but they knocked me to the point I didn't want to eat anything or move.I haven't experienced vomiting so I'm sorry to hear that but you sound like your doing amazing now😊😊

I am eating little and often, my main meals range of veggies, meats in all fresh thanks to help of my air fryer 😁 snacks of fruit or cheese & crackers. But with walking so much I just need something on the go, I don't need to lose weight or consume weight but it's my energy levels so feel something to keep me on the move I'm not looking to replace the drink with a meal either can I add 😊😌

Thank you so much for your response it's really helped 😊😁

All the best for the future.

Lidl and Aldi are now doing a good and reasonably priced range of high protein drnks, yoghurts and desserts from 15g protein upto about 25/30g. Liver specialist dietician suggest this type of thing for hubby (as well as his Fresubin supplement) - Skyr type things too. An absolute must to get your proteins and carbs in.Well done you on managing your heavy workload and take care of yourself.

Another vote for the Lidl/Aldi high protein things, hubby loves them and they help him add protein without adding lots of sugar (he has a complex form of diabetes)

Lidl do a high protein chocolate dessert with a creamy topping that is absolutely delicious. And the baked apple Isey Skyr (Waitrose) you would not know was low fat high protein!

Some of the bars are OK too but are super filling - Grenade, Trek, Barbells, Perkier are the nicest.

A third vote for the Lidl high protein range. My favourite is the Caramel pudding although I can't eat a whole one. The dog won't let me 😁

And a fourth here! I have a dietician advised diet as I have cirrhosis. I have to keep my protein levels high. Minimum 72g a day. It’s not hard to get up to these levels by eating chicken and turkey…but it can get a bit monotonous. The Lidl/Aldi high protein range are brilliant. Lovely high protein desserts without me realising I’m getting a protein hit!

Well thank you guys 💗 off to my local Aldi I go - my nurse recommended these high protein yoghurts but said she heard about the Aldi ones ✅✅ thank you everyone; wishing you all a fab day ❤️ x

Hello Danielle,I'm in the same boat.

I'm taking protein and vitamins in all kinds of forms and feel good.

My dietitian suggested to keep taking it even if I feel perfect.

Good nutrition are good for everyone .

Keep sipping :)

Hi

I lost a lot of weight before a transplant and my dietician put me on 4 Renapro supplement (not the shots/yoghurts - but the powder) which is a huge hit of protein each day after explaining i was/would be very protein deficient due to my liver damage. This was added to by meritene shakes (some protein and energy) . They both have the advantage of using water (if you want less fat) or milk and can be mixed together and vary in thickness if you have eating/swallowing issues. They also really help with upping your daily water intake in a easy non noticeable way. I have gained “good weight” and muscle, but as others have said the whole programme was designed by my dietician. If you need any further info – just shout out.

Cheers

Hey

Not sure what/where you are in the whole liver saga 😂 So hard to be anything but general in response. Whatever stage (on the list, waiting or just in general treatment) it is never a bad thing to be as fit and active as your body allows. Hard to cause harm if you are feeling well and not losing body weight or muscle mass. Again hard to be specific unless you have more info or direct questions - happy to try and answer here or in pm if you prefer that. Either way hope you continue to be as active and positive as you sound 😀

btw meritene - was for my energy levels - which were low, so maybe worth looking at.
