biopsy report, still waiting to see consultant.

hi all,

had an email with the below conclusion of my biopsy, I have a very minuscule left lobe which they want to biopsy but were unable to due to the size. So the right lobe was biopsied.

Until I see the consultant I don’t really understand the results, I know none of you are specialist or doctors but thought you might be able to shed some light on it.

Liver biopsy: There are minor non-specific changes of uncertain significance. Slight sinusoidal dilation is present in the region of the central vein with minor perisinusoidal fibrosis. There is also slight ground-glass type cytoplasmic changes.

Ok, I admit, I did have to look this up a bit on ye old t'interweb. But in layman's terms it seems:

"Sinusoidal dilation" will refer to some changes near to one of the veins in the liver that may have slightly changed the way the vein looks. There looks to be something called the "sinusoidal space" between the veins and the liver cells, so it will be in this sort of general area. If something is referred to as dilated, it just generally means its a little bigger than would usually be seen and that could be in localised spots or just generally. So if there was some localised inflammation, maybe some fatty deposits or a bit of fibrosis, that may lead to some subsequent dilation.

"Peri-sinusoidal fibrosis" looks to be one of the very early first stages of fibrosis development. The reference I saw this in related to fatty liver type disease, but it could be common to others. I'm sure your specialist is better placed to comment on that. The fact its being described as minor would sort of indicate there's not that much of it or its not that well developed. So if it was me, its probably reasonably reassuring in that there may be some very early stages of fibrosis present, but there ain't much of it.

"Ground glass cytoplasmic changes" - this seems to be seen where there has been some chronic hepatitis present. Looking at the history you've posted on your bio, that wouldn't be too surprising. The fact its been described as slight, I'd take as reassuring too.

You've clearly had quite a medical history and it's not clear why your left lobe should be so small in the first place. I hope the definitions above help you understand some of the terminology but what this means for you personally is something only your specialist is going to be able to provide. The fact that things seem to be in the very early stages of development would normally be reassuring. But, how that relates to you, given your very small left lobe and history, is likely to need some much more detailed and experienced interpretation.
