Sorry to hear about your medical problems. It sucks when medicine to treat one condition causes another condition or makes that worse. All I can say is I've been on beta blockers for portal hypertension for 20+ years without any ill effects. Good luck and take care.
Thank you for your reply sry to ask but have you got liver problems part of my liver is now cirrhosis and I have grade 2 varices so I’ve been told I’m not allowed to fly either
Dear GTGJ
If you would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays)
Best wishes

Hello, really empathise with you here. My husbands cirrhosis was caused by prescribed medication too. He decided one day shortly after diagnosis that all the medications including beta blockers for varices were making him feel worse so stopped taking them - ( we had very little understanding at this point what varices were). Alas, a week or so later he nearly lost his life from a variceal bleed. So trust your Dr's, and if you're worried, discuss it with them. My husbands beta blocker was changed for a different one which suits him better. He does what he can, eats clean, chemical free foods and hasn't even had a single paracetamol since diagnosis. BUT he has learnt his lesson about prescribed medication. Take what you're prescribed, but also question it and discuss with your Drs too. Wish you all the best,
Gosh how strange I’m on that for my liver damage !
Can I ask what dosage of azathioprine you have been taking? I have been diagnosed with `fatty liver disease` and I wonder if the two are related? I currently take azathioprine for ulcerative colitis.
Hi GTGJ, I am also on Azathioprine for Crohn's but have never been told by my Liver Consultant this is harmful for my liver, so will ask at my next appointment about this which is next week I have an appointment.
Hi. I had PSC followed by a transplant and was prescribed Prograf and Azathioprine to control rejection. Later I got PTLD and after Chemo, the Prograf was restored but at a lower dose and the Azathioprine stopped. I am still here 10 years later. Unfortunately there appears to be rare adverse reactions to some medications. Hang in there and trust your medical team.
I had same issue with a medication and had to switch to a more liver-safe medication
And I always ask and check future meds are liver safe, hope this helps....It can take a few years to reverse
Are your medications (past & present) safe on your liver
