Cirrhosis fully reversed.

It's been quite a while since I last posted. It's been 3 years since I was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and and it's 6 months now since the very doctors who diagnosed me with cirrhosis confirmed that it is fully recovered and ran fibroscan twice to confirm that indeed it is gone. Only one thing now remaining, the gallstones. Yes I had 3 of them last year,6 months ago they said 2 are remaining and are very small and no need for surgery but I can flash them out with Udihep . Unfortunately I have become lazy in taking my drugs and now am growing fat and fatter everyday despite cutting sugar.Yes Cirrhosis taught me that I can survive on coffee and hot water only without sugar and without salt. It has become my lifestyle!

Hello,

That is Fantastic news! I guess I am a little confused though. I was diagnosed with decompensated liver cirrhosis 6/13/2019. I haven’t had a drink since I ended up in hospital.

My hepatologist said my liver is now compensated has been for a couple of years. She said she thinks “I have reversed the disease. I was told however that the scaring stays “it can smooth some “ she said. Everyone’s case is different however.

Again wonderful encouraging news!

Best wishes!

Susan

Yes that's true. I couldn't believe it when the doctor first told me that it had reversed to 2nd stage, later on stress slipped back to binge drinking and after quitting for five months went back with expectations of further liver damage but now was surprised that I had fully recovered.Did second fibroscan and indeed it was confirmed that no scarring was present.

That is amazing! Did you have ascites initially? Did they do an ultrasound at all...did you have things like nodular contour or any irregularities...and did they go away?

What was your original and ending fibroscan if you do not mind sharing? Congrats yu give hope for sure!!

Congratulations! We share a similar story and it's good to hear your news. It's a strong message to others. I'd simply add to that the importance of a positive attitude and determined mindset. Its astonishing how powerful the mind can be in making a recovery.

Sure at first I had almost given up. But I have a strong wife who encouraged me that everything is possible and we will defeat this together accompanied with daily prayers.

bcsurfer Debo1 Wow that is so amazing for you both - I have been diagnosed by my GP with early cirrhosis but am waiting to see a hepatologist still :( However - the positive is that my liver elastology (by ultrasound) was 11.8 kpa in July and on Nov 1 it was 9.0 kPa so I am hoping it continues to go down. I am very fortunate to feel great and my bloodwork is mostly all back in line. I am working out alot and eating as clean as I can and absolutely no alcohol...I am hoping and praying for this outcome so wish me all the best...keeping the positive attitude is the hard part as I have always been quite a health conscious person and run half marathons etc so I am being pretty hard on myself.

I am looking for positives - my last ultrasound did not say nodular contour which the one in the summer did - so hoping and praying that means my liver is on the mend and correcting!!! My only "tell" is that I had ascites...drained the one time (praying it is gone now) and taking diuretics. My ultrasound also said "hyperechoic liver fairly homogenous with normal echogenicity"...the radiologists impression was hepatic steatosis however due to a mild irregularity at the subscapsular region early cirrhotic/fibrotic change would not be excluded. Sure hoping he is correct with the hepatic steatosis...time will tell so I am just going to keep trying to stay positive and do the right things!! Did you guys have any of this on your earlier reports and it went away...please say yes!!! :)

Great job and congrats to you guys! Pray I get the same results PLEASE!!!! :)

Hi - can I ask what you did to help this reversal?

I m anxious to know this too. I've been compensated for the last 4 years. Apart from severe tiredness and oedema in my ankles, all is OK, according to my consultant. Is all the scarring gone? Please let me know, much appreciated.LH

Hello BobbyT74The first thing I did was to cut off alcohol completely though it wasn't easy.

I backslid twice to binge drinking during this period even after almost fully recovering including early this year after losing my only brother mysteriously and sunk too low to almost depression!

Back to do's and don'ts.....

Stopped using salt and sugar though later was using salt in cooking but very little.

Cut off all carbonated drinks.

No cookies completely.

No red meat. Only fish and chicken and prepared by boiling only.

Stopped eggs but later had to use them in middle East while on an assignment.

Never took any industrial processed foods including bread or anything with yeast and industrial sugar.

Drunk lots of water like 2-3 litres a day

Ate mostly lentils, spinach, mushrooms, beans, peas, green peas,African nightshade, spider plant, carrots, roasted pumpkin seeds ugali (corn flour cake daily) lots of fruits and yes the magic of sugar free black coffee (especially the Ethiopian Bunna) crowned it all especially when I felt weak (as a mechanical technician my work involves heavy lifting and I only took leave from work for the first 14 days, but used it as an exercise for my muscles ) on weekends I would take long walks of like 5km in a day.

My doctor prescribed Liverin capsules ,Udihep forte and fybogel Orange to increase fibre.A few multivitamins, zinc and iron supplements were also occasionally used.

I must say that I had a full backup of my wife and children and with persistent prayers all went well

Awesome - why no carbonated drinks...not carbonated water?

I’m amazed by this and the other person who replied with that news. So you are saying that the scarring has completely gone and therefore the liver is functioning normally? That is absolutely fantastic to hear. I was told and have read that scarring is irreversible! Can I ask what Udihep is? I have gallstones also.

Thank you and best wishes

Debo1 profile image
Debo1 in reply toChick_atee

Yes the scarring is gone. Udihep forte is for the gallstones and also primary cirrhosis as my doctor prescribed it.

That’s brilliant! Please share your routine. Doctors always sat tgat once liver is scared it cannot be reversed 😒. However, i do believe that anything is possible. Now reading your post confirms it. Please share your journey with us. Many thanks.

It is fantastic news! I read somewhere (sorry, can't provide source, but it was from more than one reputable organization) that "certain" cirrhosis that are not alcohol related can and have been reversed. Provides a ton of hope, if true!

Mine was purely alcoholic and yes it is reversed.

"it's been 3 years since I was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis"

May I ask if this was confirmed by biopsy? Or only fibroscan?

Realy profile image
Realy in reply toMINTVCX

I t hi ought with your testing you have fibrosis? I know that fibrosis is considered a form of cirrhosis. Wasn’t your fibroscans F-1-2

MINTVCX profile image
MINTVCX in reply toRealy

No, probably I do not have any degree of fibrosis. Fibrosis alone is not enough to make any diagnosis.

Realy profile image
Realy in reply toMINTVCX

I mis read your above statement, sorry about that.

Realy profile image
Realy in reply toMINTVCX

Had fibroscan last July F-3, in February I had a Fibrosis blood test and had lost 45 pounds came back minimal Fibrosis F1-2, in June now down 65 no longer type 2 and all labs normal had Fib4 included and came back 0.70, and ultrasound normal size and Homogenous Parenchyma. Dr said all looking good. Have repeat fibroscan in November hope that shows good as well

Confused2024 profile image
Confused2024 in reply toRealy

That is great - do you mind sharing what the scores were of the fibroscan for both?

Debo1 profile image
Debo1 in reply toMINTVCX

It was confirmed by a fibroscan.

AyrshireK profile image
AyrshireK in reply toDebo1

Did you ever have any other scans (other than fibroscan) as you never really had any cirrhosis symptoms barring some yellowing of the eyes? Fibroscan alone is not sufficient to confirm a diagnosis of cirrhosis.

What were your bloods doing at the time of your original fibroscan?

If the bloods were highly elevated it may have been liver inflammation raising your kPa level to the range of cirrhosis rather than actual cirrhotic tissue. It would be highly unlikely to completely reverse cirrhosis but sustained abstinence and all the healthy lifestyle changes will have brought down the inflammation and thereby bring kPa back into normal levels. It may have been a false high kPa and no cirrhosis there in the first place.

It is worth to add that false positive fibroscan results might also occur without obvious reasons. I think it was my case (although high IRQ/median was also some factor). Probably.
