I posted a couple of weeks ago about my brother who is currently in the QEB with liver disease. You all gave such helpful advice so i’m here with an update.
Things have been up and down. A few days ago he finally got a room on a liver ward as opposed to the general ward, this has been much better for him. The encephalopathy seems to be improving- yesterday he was less paranoid, delusional than previously. My one gripe is they just don’t tell us anything. We finally got to speak briefly to a consultant yesterday who said hisMRI scan showed severe cirrhosis to the liver. However he was unable to offer any prognosis.
My big worry is what is going to happen of they eventually discharge him. He lives alone in a first floor flat (he currently cannot walk and is mainly incontinent). My elderly mother lives close by but she is 81 and I feel caring for him would be impossible for her. Any advice on where I can go for help? Or am I getting ahead of myself?

I think I said on your last thread that BEFORE he leaves hospital contact local council adult social services department who may be able to assist in a care package or similar. The Queen Elizabeth, Birmingham will have a Social Work Team on staff especially within the liver unit so you could potentially liaise with them too.
No one is going to offer any type of prognosis - they can't. It all depends on how stable your brother gets, how co-operative he is with ongoing medical care, proper diet, exercise and of course sobriety. Some people do improve others not so much.
Thank you both. They are holding a multidisciplinary team meeting this week to discuss his case. Not exactly sure what that involves but hopefully know more then. They have said there is no chance of him being discharged in near future.
I am medically trained myself but weird how when it’s close to home all common sense and knowledge goes out of the window.
An MDT will draw together all the teams involved in his care in order for them to plan future care, treatment options etc. etc. It will hopefully put into place a plan for his treatment going forwards and like you say give you some more knowledge as to what is planned, hoped for etc.
No you’re not getting ahead of yourself. It’s understandable that you want to know what will happen when he gets home etc.
When my hubby was ready for his first discharge they said that we could have 4 visits from carers a day and some physio. I didn’t take it up straight away as I was off for a bit myself.
Then he was readmitted so this time I will def be taking them up on it. It will be arranged by the hospital. I am making sure that I know what will be ready at home before we leave the hospital
Ask to speak the the Physio’s and O/T to see what they can put in place for him
Is the QEB button or Birmingham or am I totally off.
