Liver mass at 30, worried :(

Hi there

I gave birth to my first baby 6 months ago. A few weeks after birth I started experiencing extreme episodes of upper abdominal pain that travelled round my back, lasting 1-3 hours on average with nausea. Doctors brushed it off as organs returning to their place after birth or trapped wind. One time it got really bad and I was vommiting , pale poo and dark urine - went to doctors and liver levels were through the roof and jaundice. Referred for ultrasound with suspected gallstones. Had bloods redone and liver levels had came down significantly but still slightly elevated. My ultrasound did show gallstones but also a 5 x 5 x 5 approx lesion on my left liver lobe 😞 I am getting a high contrast ultrasound this week. Doctor said it could be a benign tumour or obviously cancer. I am still getting episodes of pain and I think I am jaundiced as I look very yellow. I’m so worried because I’ve read that these symptoms are often present in end stage liver cancer, or they could be the gallstones and it’s a coincidence. Does anyone have any thoughts they can share or experiences that relate to mine?

If it is related to gallstones, it is likely that your direct bilirubin levels in the blood will increase, which can cause jaundice. In addition to an ultrasound, they may want to perform an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to further investigate the bile ducts in more detail.

Dear Jessq1991

We would encourage you to get in touch with your own doctor or other health care professional about the jaundice, with any symptoms like this it is always best to speak with a health care professional as soon as possible.

If you would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays).

Best wishes

Hi Jess, I don’t have experience of what you’re going through but I’m sure others will comment if they have. However, a friend was diagnosed with cancer while she was pregnant. This was 25 years ago. Both she and her daughter plus another daughter are still thriving. So hang in there because they can do amazing things these days.

it sounds like it could very well be a blocked gall stone. Hopefully your drs will get this figured out for you asap! I’m sorry you’re going through this especially with a new baby! Prayers and positive thoughts your way for good news
