Have to say I'd not heard that before. I live in Glasgow, I have my bloods taken monthly and my printouts include Full Blood Count, Urea and Electrolytes, GGT, Liver Function Test (Bilirubin, ALT, AST, Alkaline Phosphatase and Albumin), Serum Vit B12 and Serum Folate.
It's not unusual for them to add other tests if they want to look at something in particular. Last month they added a Prostrate Specific Antigen (PSA) test and also requested a Faecal Calprotectin Stool test.
GP called yesterday with all the test results and said everything was within the normal range but Platelet count had dropped (slightly). While everything was in the normal range none of the tests results were yet at an "optimum" level. Hence, advised to go back on high-strength Vit B complex, which they previously told me to stop, try to maintain (not exceed) my current weight (64Kg), continue with the high-protein diet but reduce the total daily calorie intake, reduce cholesterol intake within the diet and increase (non-impact) physical exercise over two separate sessions daily.
For next month he said they will add a Cholesterol monitoring test. Although my Cholesterol was showing 4.4 in most recent test (which is generally considered good) they would prefer it to come down to around 4.0. They also want to have a one-off look at my Triglycerides.
These are all NHS tests, not private.
Not sure how this helps, but it sounds more like a local Health Board issue. If it was me, I'd be pushing back on my GP
