Is it possible to have HE without having the violent hand shakes they describe. I am having major concentration, memory and focus issues and periods of very short confusion where I forget here i am / what I am doing for say 20-30 seconds.
These could just be me being crap at life lately but it is becoming frustrating as there are things I want to do but just can't get my head around them.
Background: diagnosed decompressed last January. Acities drained 13 litres. Managed since with diuretics, beta blocker, b1, renapro shots, diet and no alcohol. Been told to take more lactulose but it doesn't do much they are considering some other medication alongside it at the next review. Generally the hospital are happy with my progress however the consultant doesn't have the best people skills, speaks down to you and makes you feel like she hates her life / job and you are wasting her time. Quite abrupt. They do blood tests, ultrasounds and other procedures. Ask you some questions but never give you anything back in terms of meaningful information.

Yes it's possible to have Hepatic Encephalopathy without the asterixis - hand flap. That's at the more severe end of the scale. Your symptoms sound similar to my hubby with mild/covert HE.Hubby is on Rifaximin in combination with lactulose.
Definately mention it to your Dr's- my husband is questionable HE, no-ones really sure, except he has been so much improved on Rifaxomin. Even in himself, his general health etc, HE symptoms aside he feels much better on it. Consultant told us it used to be a hugely expensive drug so many doctors are reluctant to prescribe (our chemist won't do it, it has to come from hospital) but he said it isn't actually the case anymore but folks don't seem to have caught on. Just mentioning this, as your Dr's might not like you suggesting it!!
