Hi There
Just to let you know my hubby had the same issue.
Diagnosed with Alpha 1 Anti Trypsin Deficiency (hereditary) around 2006.
Transplanted in 2011. This liver still fine.
If you have any questions feel free to respond.

I too have genetic One Alpha disease. The worst type ‘ZZ’. It is a recessive gene, and both mum and dad provided me with the bad gene. My brother is ‘MZ’ so he has one good gene which means he does not have the same prognosis or clinical symptoms. I have known I have had the disease for over 20 years, thanks to a chance finding following a routine blood test. I have been monitored with liver ultrasound and blood tests every 6 months with few if any symptoms. However, I was informed that I had cirrhosis due to the most of the defective one alpha enzyme manufactured in the liver remaining in and scarring the liver. So the cirrhosis was getting worse slowly by slowly. Sadly over the last two months what was stable cirrhosis has changed to end stage liver failure. With liver ascites and significant symptoms. So I am in the process of being considered for a liver transplant. However, many factors need to be considered for this including age, I am 67yrs, and medical history. I am sure there are many people who have one alpha disease who are unaware of it. There is little that can be done until symptoms become apparent. There is also a small percentage of patients, some of them children, who have severe respiratory symptoms as the enzyme one alpha is required to maintain the respiratory system. Genetic makeup and how these genes express themselves is responsible for a lot more than we generally acknowledge. All the best to all of us on our journey through life.
I never heard of this Alpha thing.. I knew genetics could play a role but I didn't really consider it. Until now.. My grandfather had cirrhosis and died from it at 40 something years old. He was a drinker as well.
I'll have to look into this. Thanks.
I also have NAFLD it is quite common I my case have never been able to isolate cause but never more than a social drinker As didn't particularly like the stuff & more interested in fitness
