Hello,

I've been offered a new position but subject to undertaking a health assessment and questionaire.

I was diagnosed with fatty liver 18 months ago, does anyone have any expoerience on whether this will show as a red flag when disclosed to the employer?

If you are in the UK then give ACAS a quick ring - they will be able to advise on your rights and responsibilities as an employee and whether or not to disclose your condition. Long term health conditions are covered under the Equalities Act so it may be that your employer needs to know so as they can make whatever 'reasonable adjustments' are needed for you to do your job ........ this can be things as simple as acknowleding you may need time off for attending medical appointments etc.

ACAS know all the legalities as to what you need to do at this stage. I'd give them a ring before completing your paperwork. acas.org.uk/advice

Hi,

I work in Human Resources. If you're in the UK, FLD is a condition likely to persist for 3 years or more and would therefore be deemed a disability, therefore if they were to withdraw the offer of employment this could be illegal.

The reason they will be asking is to ensure that if you have a medical condition that any reasonable adjustments can be made, anything from where your desk is located to the hours of work.

If you are in the UK you do not have to legally declare a medical condition, but it can be useful to let your employer know so that they can make adjustments as above, refer you to occupational health and offer all reasonable levels of support.

Based on what I have heard about 50% of the population have a fatty liver to some extent.. I think it's pretty common.

Think its more common than that, a vast number of the population have it but don't know so. You just need to see the number of donor livers that don't get used due to excess fat. Obviously fatty liver can occur in alcohol related liver disease and in non alcohol related.

I work in HR and honestly, don't worry about it. Lots of employers do this to ensure they comply with legal requirements under the Equality Act. Like someone else said, fatty liver is pretty common so as long as you keep yourself healthy then you'll be fine.

Do you have a local citizens advice bureau near you? If not their website is very useful. I don't know for sure but in the past new recruits had to complete a medical questionnaire - as the manager, I didn't see the answers. My recruit told me she had to see a counselor for certain issues. Recruit didn't have to divulge to me. I would not have known anything otherwise.

I am hazarding a guess that the health questionnaire is for the company as much as the individual? Hope all goes well.

No, but they will want to know what you have done to reduce your fatty liver. After 18 months if you have led a healthy for 18 months it should have healed and be back to normal. If not they may want to contact your GP.
