Hello, As far as I know determination of free kappa (к) and lambda (λ) chains in urine and serum with the calculation of their ratio is used to diagnose monoclonal and polyclonal gammopathy. It should be noted that an increase in the concentration of free light chains does not always indicate the presence of monoclonal gammopathy. Their concentration also increases with polyclonal gammopathy observed in certain infectious diseases or impaired renal function. In polyclonal gammopathy, however, there is a proportional increase in both kappa and lambda chains and the κ/λ ratio remains normal. In monoclonal gammopathy, the concentration of only one of the two types of light chains increases and the κ/λ ratio changes. The reasons for the increase in kappa in the urine for you personally should be explained by the doctor when he receives all the results of your examinations.

Ok, a kappa or lambda protein can be found in urine and indeed blood. We all have these circulating but if they are outside normal levels then it could be a sign of an issue that needs further investigation. I used to have this tested occaisionally amongst the tests i had with kidney disease but its not isolated to kidney issues. Obviously you can read online and find all sorts of scary possibilities. But, there also could be other more benign reasons for the cause. So do not jump to any conclusions from this single test result. Your GP probably won't tell you what it means because at the moment they won't know either, lol.

Doing the blood test will give a bigger picture, if its still highlighted as raised it may prompt further investigations. If its not, then it could simply be just a transient anomaly in a similar way isolated variations in other tests can be.

Clearly they have highlighted an anomaly, so let them run the further tests they need and take it from there. As the picture becomes clearer I'm sure they'll give you more information on the possibilities.

Good luck.
