Always feeling cold

Hi I'm stage 4 cirrhosis and I am always freezing cold. Is this linked to my condition? I have the heating on and an electric throw on sometimes as well. Just never seem to feel warm. Thanks, Emma

Hi Emma,

Yep, i'm afraid so. Feeling cold is very much one of the things you experience with cirrhosis. The liver is a key part of the body's energy producing system apparently. So, with cirrhosis, its ability to do that function is affected. One of the effects of this is that feeling of being cold most of the time. I very much had the same issue and i've heard others have the same too.

One of the 500+ different functions the liver takes care of is to maintain the blood temperature, As blood flows through the liver it is detoxified and cleaned. Because the liver is the largest organ In the body, the blood is warmed as it passes through.

If the liver is heavily cirrhotic, the build-up of scar tissue may prevent the blood from warming as efficiently as it should. This in turn may cause the body to feel much colder.

Many thanks. At least I can justify having the heating on now!

I'm afraid that it's a symptom of cirrhosis. Before my transplant, I was having to wear thermal vests and jumpers in the 30° plus heat of the Philippines! All my family thought I was nuts until I explained to them that it was all part of the disease.
