Elevated LFT's unknown cause and food allergies?

I recently got admitted to hospital with agonising upper abdo pain which radiated round to my back, which I now believe to be related to food allergies. I have addressed this and fingers crossed, so far so good. I've had no more stomach flare ups.

I am 33 years old, I RARELY drink, like once in a blue moon. Last time I drank was at a function in May. My most recent was the end of October, again a birthday party. I do not smoke and lead a fairly active, healthy lifestyle.

When in hospital they obviously did routine bloods tests on admission, which showed slightly elevated ALT at 153. The doctor's repeated a second blood test and showed that my ALT had jumped to 500. I had a third blood test a couple of days later and my ALT had decreased by 30 but my bilirubin had increased to 47. Whilst in hospital I have passed very pale stools and very dark urine (I informed nurses/doctors) I've been allowed home as scans showed everything was ok (gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, liver all ok) I am generally well in myself apart from a tender upper abdo area. I have been asked to go to my doctors in a week and have blood tests repeated, which of course I will do. I have woke up this morning (day after discharge from hospital) and the whites of my eyes are ever so slightly yellow. I feel ok and I am hoping my bloods in a week show some improvement.

I am reaching out for any similar experiences? Could this all be related to a food allergy? Any insight would be most grateful.

Thanks J. X

Your story could be my story. I suddenly had elevated Alat , which jumped up and down for some months. My doctor thought it could be due to plant / Nature medicine I had been taking. But after several examinations , I got the diagnosis AIH 5 years ago. Hope the best for you.

Hiya thanks for taking time to reply. Yes I had read about this. I'm going to see what next lot of bloods say...I don't feel amazing still, but im able to carry on as normal. Auto immune diseases run in my family on both sides...so it stands a chance. Obviously to early to say at the moment. Can I ask is it something that's manageable and are you ok?

Thanks J x

yes, it is managable , I have not been tired as many are. My Alat has been fine for 2,5 years, but suddenly, this sommer , it increased to 105 ( normal reference in DK is 18-45 ) Has jumped a bit up and down.

Now my medication with Azathioprine 50 mg has been added with 10 mg prednisone. That makes my tinnitus even more loud and intrusive. But hopefully I will be back to normal dose again. 🙏 So nothing to worry about concerning getting the AIH diagnosis. 😊

Did they scan your pancreas?Or test your lipase/ amylase levels? The pain you describe and pale stools/dark urine can also be pancreas related. I had gallstone pancreatitis a couple of years back and had my gallbladder removed.

Heyyyy yes they ultra sounded and checked everything. Absolutely no issues at all ... They said a stone may have passed but even then they said highly unlikely as no ducts were dilated. They did full blood screening, hepatitis, hiv etc. Everything came back clear. The doctor said I was a mystery 😂 my dad had his gallbladder removed also, so thought it may be a family thing...but nothing...I've had all this confirmed on 2 scans at 2 different hospitals. All my organs are fine. Had X rays and ultra sounds. Thank you for taking time to reply.

That's great news, if still a mystery! Viruses such as covid can wreak havoc though rarely show up in tests. Fingers crossed its a temporary thing and you'll soon be good as new. X

Yes COVID did spring to mind! Fingers crossed it goes away and was just a blip! Thanks again for replying.
