elevated liver tests but no diagnosis since 2004!!

hi everyone,

Im 38 years old now and i have been having elevated liver enzymes since 2004 (22 years old).

I have almost had all necessary tests done (biopsy twice, tons of blood tests for all sort of liver related diseases etc…) but nobady could name a proper diagnosis so far.

Im recently on Ursoactive and that way i keep my enzymes low. I have 0 symptoms! No fatty liver or anything.

really no idea about what’s happening within my body!!:)

I read about very rare cases of elavated LFT amongst healthy people. The blood just reacts somehow in the way that shows false positive values.

However you wrote about Ursoactive so it might not be your case.

Anyway please keep in mind that the patient is being treated not the results of the tests. You have been doing well for 22 years so I think the same will be for the coming years.

I sort of know that feeling, lol. It can be quite frustrating. Hopefully, you'll continue to have many symptom and complication free years to come.

There's clearly something that your liver doesn't like, or doesn't like your liver. I'm guessing they me be going along the cholestatic/biliary system sort of route with prescribing the URSO. Has anybody mentioned small duct psc? That can be tricky to spot, especially if there's no sign of fibrosis.

Hopefully they'll keep monitoring you and if something does crop up they can implement an appropriate management plan.

Good luck.

thanks for your message Kristian. Actually i have had liver biopsy done twice and the results didn’t show any signs which are consistent with PCS morphology. I had a gallbladder surgery in 2007 and after the surgery they prescribed Urso, then we decided to keep taking it, because this seems the only way to keep my enzymes in normal range…

I think you are definitely right saying that there is something i eat / drink or smell which my liver doesn’t like at all:))

mine have been up since 2013 I’m 36 and I‘ve had an ultrasound every year, barium swallow ct scan, hida scan endoscopy nothing has shown anything yet do you mind me asking how high yours are? My dr doesn’t know what to think, mine are 1 pt elevated for AST, 11 points elevated for ALT every thing else is normal. I haven’t had a biopsy. I did have Hep A and it cleared also I had pre eclampsia of pregnancy that’s when this all started

hi there;

I suggest a biopsy cause its the best way to find out what’s happening inside your liver.

If i don’t use Urso, they are like crazy high; almost AST / ALT above 200-300 ang GGT around 1000:))

I found something about elevated AST.

"Macro-aspartate transaminase (macro-AST) must be considered when the aspartate transaminase (AST) level is chronically high without any liver, cardiac, or muscle disease."

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/254...

However it is only about AST not other like ALT, GGT. So I think is not your case.

I have had elevated liver enzymes for decades. First discovered in mid 90’s but I think I’ve had them most of my adult life. Like yourself nothing else showed up until 3 yrs ago when I got fatty liver disease and a lot of pain in my right rib section. I felt really lousy as well and fibroscan showed some hardening of my liver. Specialist told me to stop drinking entirely and cut out sugar, lose weight, reduce carbs, exercise, etc etc I was only ever an occasional social drinker and had not been obese only slightly overweight. Things have improved except for the enzymes which are still high but stabilized. I would not drink much if at all, watch your diet and your drug intake and get tested regularly. I took tons of Tylenol for migraines when I was younger and feel that contributed to it. It can also be genetic. My father died of liver cancer so he probably had liver issues. Keep positive and don’t freak out but don’t ignore it either. Good Luck!

thank you Beachgirl77,

I had an ultrasound made 2 months ago and the doctor said i had fatty liver stage 1 but there is nothing to worry about, do exercise etc… this is actually not my first time; i’d had rhe same, actually stage 2 fatty liver, like 5-6 years ago, then i started exercising regularly and watched out what i ate, so thing had improved and my liver had gotten back to its normal condition.

But now i know i need to change my lifestyle again as i am kinda overweight and enjoy eating all the unhealthy stuff:(

Regarding the FS, i had made this 4 years ago and the result was that i had stage 2 fibrosis!! And stage 3 fatty liver… i was definitely freaked out and had a traditional liver biopsy made immediately after that to confirm the results. Then guess what; 0 fibrosis and 0 fat in my liver!!! I have also heard lots of fake FS results from other people so far, thats why i have got zero confidence in Fibroscan.

Some specialists said this might have been a result of an allergic reaction to something which your liver doesn’t like!! Might be a parfume, scent, food, shampoo… anything !!! But i wish i knew the exact reason of this:(

The only thing i know; as long as i take ursodeoxicolic acid, my enzymes go normal, so i keep taking it.

Did you know your histological specimens were stained for reticulin fibers (reticulin stain)? This can sometimes be important for the morphological diagnosis of regenerative nodular hyperplasia of the liver. In addition, the morphologist must be well educated and actively and carefully look for histological signs of this disease.

they checked that one also while examining a piece of my liver:)
