First Fibroscan

Hi guys,so I just had a face to face with my consultant(which I asked for),for a general catch up. He’s really pleased with everything, and at the end I said will I be having a Fibroscan at some point, with that he stood up and whipped out this big laptop, had me lay on the bed and he did it there and then. He just said, that’s interesting your on the cusp of not having cirrhosis. 8.8kpa was my reading. So that’s after being decompensated with ascites two years ago. I’m 2 years 3 months off the booze. He said if he was to go just in that reading,my scans and bloods he would send me on my way,but as I had the ascites and my platelets are a bit low he said might as well carry on with the scans. Fibroscan in a couple of years where all being well he would de-escalate my diagnosis. So there’s hope guys, keep going and ask questions, get all your reports, bloods, track everything. I only got that result/appointment today because I can’t just accept ‘no significant change’. 😊👍

That is all I ever get: "no significant change"!

Is there anything you want to know?

Not really...just fed up hearing the same old thing. Broadly, everything is going in the right direction - will just take time...

I see, well that’s good! The reason I wanted to see my consultant was my US were coming back mildly fatty liver and the odd one heterogeneous cirrhotic liver and in the absence of Fibroscan that was a bit wishy washy for me!

I’m really pleased I followed my gut instinct to push to get more information. I’m over the moon about the result!!

Great! Feeling healthy (enough) in yourself?

Fittest, healthiest and strongest I’ve ever been in my life. Mentally sharp,at college studying psychotherapy. Volunteering for substance abuse charity as a peer mentor. It’s taken a lot of work to get where I am now.

That’s really positive, so good for you. I’m expecting a less than favourable fibroscan tomorrow, so sort of looking for rays of sunshine.

How did you get on with your Fibroscan?

in reply to deanw41

Thanks for checking in. The Fibroscan said S1 / F0-1, which is good. The more difficult part is that I seem to have physical symptoms (broken spider veins on chest, red hands/feet, RUQ pain) that everything seems to suggest is more associated with late stage liver disease than mild fatty liver. The logical part of me thinks I don’t drink enough for cirrhosis (and the scan backs that up), even if I have tended to drink above the NHS guidelines (as many do). But not really sure what to think - I guess it could be that something in the liver or elsewhere is causing some sort of hormonal disruption?

I’ll go back to the GP this week once I get the formal Fibroscan report back after the bank holiday weekend and see.

Ah spotted your post now....that’s fantastic news. I’m constantly surprised at how forgiving the liver is if it’s treated correctly. You’ve done really well...and the great thing is that you are using your experience to help other people. That’s fantastic too.

Great news. From "decompensated with ascites two years ago" to current fibroscan result and better US is always a good news. Good luck.

such goods news Dean - I’m so glad youve got a second chance at life you must have been so determined and kept positive even at the worst times . Your post has given so much hope to ne and many more more people.

Please can I ask you about your ascetics ? My son who is 62 and has been a regular drinker for over 40 year was diagnosed in 2021 with decompensated cirrhosis. He couldn’t eat any solids for almost a year but he has been getting ascetics drains every week and is starting to have an appetite and is a little more mobile - he’s lost nearly 10 stone . He stopped drinking alcohol immediately and his blood results come back abnormal but expected . How long did you have ascetics and how much did they drain from you each time ? He has had a permanent drain fitted which is helping . He was given a prognosis of upto two years and it’s difficult to get this out of our heads . I have no other family and I want to help as much as I can . How youve overcome your health problems has given me hope - thank you . I wish you lots of happiness enjoyment in life and great success in your studying . Well done Dean

Best wishes Carol xx

Hi Carol, thank you for your kind reply. I’m sorry to hear about your son and that you all having to experience this s&@t. To give you some context,I presented with 10ltrs of ascites and I’d lost a lot of weight(pregnant skeleton). I will say I never felt un well though and carried on as normal probably for a good month or so then I took myself to the hospital because people kept going on a me.(I was still doing gardening, going to work etc because a GP told me I was constipated 🤦‍♂️). They said I had cirrhosis,I stayed over night,no detox and walked out the next day with water pills. I was drained 9 weeks later and it never came back. My bloods normalised in ten months and I never had a fibroscan. My US would say smooth liver with fatty infiltration so I always questioned my diagnosis. Everyone is different and I have some amazing recovery story’s. I’ve always had a strong will and put everything into getting better. Keep having hope and I wish you both all the best. If you have anymore questions please don’t hesitate to ask me. 😊🧘‍♂️

well done, you should be so proud of yourself 😊 My husband almost 5 yrs ago had a fibroscan. It came up as F3 KPA 17. The consultant told him it would probably not improve but if got off the drink he could preserve what liver he had left. He’s not had a drink since, last month he had another Fibroscan and it’s now F0-F1 KPA 3.5 which I’m told is just fatty liver?

Thank you. Wow that’s a normal liver(from what I researched),amazing isn’t it. Excellent all round!😊👍

I just don't get the thing about fibroscans.

My first scan was made when I was decompensated, but already off alcohol for half a year. 35kpa. Repeated scan one year after, 55kpa.

Now the third scan, four and half a year after my last drink. My liver is fully compensated, blood results pretty fine, I'm feeling fit, no need for any medicine. Fibroscan result: 70kpa. How can this be? My doctor (who's not able to perform a scan, have to visit a special center) says I should only focus on my feeling and bloods, is he right?

feeling great but I might be getting some fluid build up in my abdomen. It’s kinda hard to tell.

How are things going? Did you get a Dr’s app?

pushthrough profile image
pushthrough in reply to deanw41

Not yet but I will soon. The feeling seemed to subside. It was one of those things where I actually noticed my stomach while sitting. Kinda like you don’t really notice your breathing unless you have a wheez. Didn’t hurt at all. I do have a habit of consuming a lot of water and coffee so I started cutting down on that as well. On a side note I’m so excited for you! Liver bros for life. Ahaha.

YesI know what you mean. I remember after my drain, whilst still in the ‘unknown phase’,I was so aware of bloating and being full. Checking my eyeballs everyday was another one. Fingers crossed it will just be a feeling. Liver Bros…I like it..😆. Yeah, well I had a feeling and I went with my intuition, only you know your body right…nobody else is you. Dr’s go on statistics and if you have this then you have that and it equals there. I love doing the research, knowledge is so powerful.
