Can Methylprednisolone affect Ascites?

I am currently on 100mg spironolactone and 40mg furosemide daily to help my Ascites.

Recently I hurt my back running and was prescribed a 4mg/day methylprednisolone dose pack to help with the injury. I began taking the steroid last Tuesday evening, and by Wednesday afternoon to my pleasure noticed a marked reduction in my Ascites…like possibly even gone completely. I concluded the steroid pack on Sunday and since then have experienced a big increase in my Ascites in my midsection which is greater than what I had to begin with.

I am due to go in for a paracentesis this Friday and am certain they will get way more than last time. Is it possibly that:

1 . The steroid actually helped my Ascites while taking it?

2. That coming off of even a low dose has left my body in a worse position than before?

My cirrhosis was caused by NASH and I had been fight to control the Ascites via low dose diuretic which I have to cut in half due to hyponatremia now. That is supposed to begin after my draw Friday. I am terribly afraid that taking this steroid has hurt my condition…hoping it is just taking my body time to adjust being off of them now but I don’t know what to think anymore. This is all incredibly frustrating and frightening

Dear Crooktele79

This is a question that your own health care professional is best-placed to answer, as only they have access to your medical records.

We suggest talking this through with your own doctor or health care professional in the first instance.

Best wishes
