Worried and advice appreciated

My aunty has been submitted to hospital with Jaundice and pale stalls and very orange urine, yet no pain. Mri has shown no gall stones neither has Endoscopy. It seems like Liver failure but i donn't remember seeing her drink much at all. She is active and certainly not overweight and eats well.

The doctors seem puzzled and of course my mum and i are really worried. I accept and understand it could be failure due to fatty liver or non alcholic related but they don't seem any closer after many blood tests? Any ideas i am 27 now so i can accept cold hard facts!

Check if she has been tested for alpha 1 anti trypsin deficiencyThat's what my husband was discovered to have. It is genetic and not always tested for.

Good luck

Thankyou Freddie, i checked the symptoms and i cant say she's displayed any apart from a persistent cough at times but then she's had that years on off as far as i remember when staying over weekends etc. I will mention to the doctor. They've taken so many blood samples. Very yellow eyes now.

Hi Chloester, there are lots of things that can affect your liver apart from alcohol, viruses and autoimmune conditions. Your aunt is in the best place and hopefully they will find answers and treatments. If it’s her liver, it’s a very resilient , if unpredictable, organ.

Standard advice on here - do not Google! You’ll just freak yourself out. Patience can be hard but sometimes you just have to wait for the doctors to do their thing.

You are obviously a very caring niece so just focus on what you can do to help while she’s in hospital - feed pets, water plants... I know you’ll be there for her whatever she needs.

Thankyou for your kind words. The hospital has been frustrating though after causing complications with an endoscopy procedure she's now awaiting a biopsy as they Still seem to have no idea.

I had the same issues but mine was the result of catching hepatitis A from contaminated food prepared by someone. But my alt ast values were upwards of 2500 which knowing the normal upper limit is 40-45 ish 2500 was a lot to think about.

Biopsy is the only way to confirm some liver conditions but it’s not nice so I think they prefer to rule out other things first. I know the wait is hard. Hang in there

Just to update it seems my Aunts issues stemmed from Flucoxacillin used to treat an infection!! Just putting it out there as it seems the Doctor didn't have a clue it was only after a specialist in the hospital researched her illness and came to this conclusion, she is at home now slowly recovering, it nearly killed her can we campaign to have this drug banned.
