Ct scan show cirrhosis?

I’ve been seen by colorectal today due to abdominal pain and issues with my bowels...had worries about my liver but lfts are normal (stopped drinking now). The colorectal surgeon wants to do a ct scan as I’ve lost weight and due to my bowel issues and because I’ve had 3 csections. She only briefly asked about drinking and I said “I used to but not anymore” she asked no further but now feel like maybe I should of said to what extent because it sounds like I’m just a non drinker. Would the ct scan show cirrhosis of my liver anyway? Seeing my Gp tomorrow and she’ll ask about the appointment....feel like my mind and body is a mess 😩

I'm not sure about a CT showing it but I know an MRI will if they scan that area. After that they typically like to confirm it using other tests, including blood work and a fibroscan.

Here is a useful publication 'Liver disease tests explained' that has a section about CT scans in;

I had a CT before my umbilical hernia repair and it noted a shrunken appearance and a nodular curve (I think it was) consistent with cirrhosis. So in my experience a CT will pick up any obvious changes.

I had 2 CT scans in the year pre discovering I had fibrosis. Neither raised any suggestion of liver damage. The first was a colorectal one that caught the liver and showed a tiny live lesion. The second was a follow up to see that it hadnt changed over 6m, meaning it was a cyst. I asked my heptologist about this and he said you really have to know what you are looking for to see damage on a CT. My guess also is that the damage has to be serious enough it terms of arterial damage for it to be obvious

Whyt is correct. Blood tests are only a snap shot of what is happening the day of the test, its just a guide, more used for acute liver damage, ie go out drinking or on meds and your liver stats will be up, GGT, AST, ALT etc. A better indication is aspects like Bilburin, Aburin etc ie is the liver still doing what it is meant to. You can get more advanced LFTS if you suspect something. But in my opinion a Fibrascan is your best next option. Non invasive and reasonably priced, you can sometimes get them privately without referral. I had normal bloods, a normal CT and MRI with contrast, so I was in a bit of shock when my Fibrascan results came back. CT and MRI should show fatty deposits, or any change in size of the liver or lesions etc but not always, its a combination of a few tests.

I thought a CT was right up there with a fibroscan when trying to diagnose the condition, but with MRI being the best scan available…
