No, black stools is a sign of an upper intestinal bleed. He needs medical attention as soon as possible. If this is a new symptom take him to the hospital straight away. This could be a medical emergency. Go to A&E today.

Thankyou we went to a&e after sitting there for 3 hrs waiting to be seen (he is very poorly) we got seen, they did bloods and said they were same as some they took last week, we took a sample with us which was black, they examined him and said it was now brown, he did another sample which was more black than brown, we ended back home (after 8 hrs there) going to get onto liver clinic this morning (if it’s open) and ask to speak with a doctor as nothing has changed since being home, nose bleeds when he blows it,stools still black/brown thx for everyone replies

Hello,

I hope you have been able to get through to the liver clinic this morning. Have a low threshhold for getting him back to A and E or calling 999 if you are worried. Sometimes when people with liver disease have a bleed in their gut they can start to get a bit confused (hepatc encephalopathy) - another reason to get him to hospital.

Keep us posted.

regards

Hi 🙂

Absolutely 100% agree with what Kristian has said, if you can't get to A&E ring 999! Your husband has end stage liver disease and he could be having a Variceal bleed, stress his dark stool (which could be blood).

I know the NHS is stretched to put it mildly, but this should be prioritised.

I hope you get some help pronto.

Take care 🙂

Don’t ignore this symptom. As the other posters have said get to A&E asap. It should be treated as a medical emergency. He will almost certainly need an endoscopy so make sure he doesn’t eat or drink. If you go at this time it will be quieter than later.

Dear Whitethorn, please seek medical attention URGENTLY as these symptoms could potentially be a medical emergency. Take care and keep us posted,Trust10.
