Hey everyone, my mum has been diagnosed with cirrhosis a couple of months ago and she is suffering from awful itching - does anyone have any experience of this and tips to help? Thanks

Itching
I believe (just a view) it's a common symptom of cirrhosis. The first few months (and intermittently since) I had relentless itching and had to buy a back scratcher. Has she spoken to a GP or liver specialist about it? I think she should if she hasn't as people could - with the best intentions - suggest supplements, creams and so on that might not help or be appropriate.
Thank you I will certainly make sure she mentions it to doctor I know like you say unfortunately part and parcel of the illness.
Hello, I am sorry to hear about your Mums itch. It can be very debilitating.
Firstly, I woul d encourage her to let her doctors know - they may wish to carry out some blood tests and/or prescribe suitable treatment or medication.
Often with treatment/medication it may be a case of trial and error to find something that helps.
On a day to day practical level, I am sure our forum members will share their experiences but here are a few wee tips.
1. Cool, loose cotton clothing
2. Cool, ventilated room - particularly at night
3. Moisturise skin well
4. Keep nails short or wear cotton gloves if you can bear it - to minimise skin breaks
5. Tepid bath or shower before bed.

Thanks so much for the tips - I will pass these on to her.
Hi Steph, sorry to hear about your mum. I have suffered with a terrible itch for many years, started on my feet to begin with, my feet are still the worse part but I itch everywhere now. Best not to scratch it but I do and I have made my skin really sore and bleed at times. I have been prescribed various medicines for this over time. Should get your mum to mention it to her consultant or GP see if they can help x
Thank you everyone xx
