Good evening

I have been taken off my spirolactone and I'm frightened ascites will return. I have been on them for 2 yrs and my ascites have never returned but now I'm frightened constantly checking my ankles legs and weight. My liver is doing OK and I'm now well Compensated. Has anyone got any positive stories for me.

Many thanks

Hi Chaz

Dont worry too much about being taken off spiro, or any other diuretic. This is pretty common as most diuretics can have some adverse effects on other organs and is pretty much the usual practice. It was for me anyway.

Giving your body a break from them is a good thing.

There is a risk that your ascites or fluid build up can return. If it does then I'm sure your doc will happily start the diuretics again. Again, this was my experience.

Check to see if the fluid is returning is actually a good idea. But, and i know this is easier said than done, dont let it rule your life. If you do notice it happening then just pop back to the docs who I'm sure will restart the diuretics again. In my experience that seemed to be the usual practice anyway.

Good luck

I agree with Kristian, consider yourself LUCKY that you were taken off this drug which has side effects! If your doctor thinks you can make it without this drug, that means he feels you are getting better and simply put, your body needs one less foreign chemical additive in your diet to do what your body should do naturally. Now you are off it already and still doing well! This is a cause for celebration, not distress because you are healing.

As Bobby McFerrin sings "Don't Worry Be Happy". Look it up on youtube if you have forgotten it.

Hi Chaz3125, I’m still on Spironolactone. My best advice would be to stick to low salt. If you fancy crisps, then buy a salt and shake pack and add half of the sachet of salt. Do not cook with salt and add low sodium salt after very sparingly. Look at labels on foods and avoid ready made meals which have a lot of salt and sugar in them to make them taste better. Eat lots of vegetables, some fresh fruit and drink 2 litres of water per day. You’ll still have the effects of the diuretics this way as the salt isn’t drying you up. This will give your kidneys relief after being on diuretics.

This and many other tips given to me by the Liver Dietician.

You’ll know when you’ve got ascites again firstly by headaches, feeling unwell, then the ankles look swollen then the abdomen rises out until you look pregnant and it’ll be hard. I wish you all the best and well done for tackling your health and liver so good that it’s compensated now. That’s your positive message for us too. xx
