Does anyone have any advice for losing weight with cirrhosis? My brother has been sober for 2 years now after being decompensated. All his levels are good and his liver has regenerated to a level. He has real trouble sleeping and has a carb snack before bed to get him through the night as advised by the dietician. He's put on weight and it's really getting him down that he can't lose weight and cut out carbs. Would it be a good idea for him to increase his protein intake, has anyone got any tips? X

Hello,
The best advice would come from a liver specialist dietician and would be tailored exactly to the needs of your brother. It is important, as well, to establish that it is not fluid in the body that is increasing his weight.
Can he ask his medical team/GP for a dietician referral.
Here are some links which may be helpful. The Diet booklet is a general one.

Thanks for your reply. He hasn't got ascites or any oedema in his legs like he had when he was admitted to hospital 2 years ago. He wants to try and build he strength up but struggles to get through the day without a power nap and then is awake at night till dawn and so the circle continues. He was on a water table that gave him moobs, I think he's just feeling very low as he's so tired and can't seem to get a grip. He's waiting for a dietician app x
I joined weight watchers and lost the weight gained by taking steroids. You'd be surprised by what you can eat and lose weight.
