New Member - Recent diagnosis of Cirrhosis

Oscar_The_Grouch profile image

I have had NAFLD for a number of years now but I have now been diagnosed with cirrhosis after a Fibroscan result of 30. My liver function remains normal but I have been prescribed a low dose beta-blocker Carvedilol. I have not been given information or advise on how I should treat this condition and I am hoping for advice from those on here with more experience of this condition.

What is the best way of stopping the advance of cirrhosis? I am currently losing weight and I am on a diet. I am lacking exercise due to the pain in my joints which restricts my movement. Hopefully when I lose a bit more weight that will help me get moving again. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi and welcome Oscar,

Your liver specialist has a duty of care to explain your liver diagnosis to you, including stage of cirrhosis, any relevant treatments, how you will be monitored, diet guidance etc.

Here is our publication on Cirrhosis;

britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

and also you may want to read our 'Patient Charter' that details the care you should except to receive if you are diagnosed with a liver condition in the UK;

britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

If you are in the UK and would like a chat regarding this, you can call our helpline on 0800 652 7330 Mon to Fri 10am to 3pm. However, we would suggest to speak to your own doctor first for clarity and guidance.

Best wishes.

Thanks Trust1. I literally got my diagnosis letter this week so I am sure they will fill me in at my next appointment. Thanks so much for the links, I will take time to go through them and educate myself a bit.

You are welcome, do call our helpline if you need a chat too :)

Hi Oscar. It sounds to me as though you are doing all the right things including losing weight to help relieve your joint pain enabling you to excercise more easily before too long. Make sure you also avoid sugar, salt and alcohol.. Drink plenty of tea, coffee and water but avoid all suppliments on sale claiming to cleanse your liver.... they certainly don't.Take care and continue to look after yourself

Best wishes

Thanks For the advice Laura. So happy tea is a good thing, I’m a bit of an Earl Grey fiend! I don’t drink alcohol any more so that’s not an issue, the only supplement I take is a D3 in winter. I think the weight loss is where I should concentrate my efforts, lockdown was not good for me and I put on a lot of kilograms. The hard part is taking them back off.

Ooo Earl Grey and Lady Grey for me too ! You will probably be surprised to find the weight actually comes off quicker than you put it on. You may reach 'plateaus ' where you seem to stop losing. It's at that point many people think they aren't going to lose any more and sadly go back to old eating habits and put all the weight back on again. But it's at that point where you need to stick with it because you will continue to lose more pounds and be encouraged by the fact you are doing it for the good of your liver which in turn will look after you and your aim is to become more mobile again. Good luck to you.

Losing Weight is easy :) Eat clean and exercise when you can.. Strength training does help a lot. I'm not sure if you like Black Coffee but it does speed up your metabolism and aid in weight loss! Good Luck!

What is clean eating?

in reply to

Fresh fruit and veg. Freshly prepared meals made from scratch rather thsn buying processed foods and ready meals. No added salt and sugar or alcohol. Drink tea, coffee and plenty of water. Eat plenty of fresh fish and white meats which are low in fat and high in protein which, along with exercise will help to rebuild muscles as cirhossis can cause them to weaken quite dramatically.

There were some rather tasty recipes posted on here the other day which would be well worth looking for 😀 it was on a post a day ago called plant based meals.

Drink warm water with lemon squeezed into it as the first thing in the morning. Make a smoothie out of beets,celery, carrots,spinach and anything else that you like and drink daily. Ginger is wonderful and aids in digestion..eat it daily...if you drink green tea, add sliced ginger and lemon into it...there are many other things that you can do...

Thanks idyllic, I’m a fan of ginger and green tea. I also do saffron tea too. I heard about the warm water and lemon before so I’ll give that a try too

Can you do that in a blender as opposed to a juicer?

The smoothie..I always do in a blender...so none of the good stuff gets thrown out. Your body needs that fiber! Beets are very good for liver and heart health!

Is it ok to have something sweet once in a while? A cookie or an ice cream once in a week?

in reply to idyllic420

I think ice lollies are better than ice cream and l believe you can get sugar free ones sweetened by natural fruit juices and very refreshing in this hot weather. You can definately also get reduced sugar biscuits. Which are obviously the better treats to have.Best wishes
