Is it heartburn I'm feeling after esophageal banding? Feel like something stuck in my chest.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the advice the other day regarding my diet and food options after my esophageal banding. I just returned home after the general anesthetic banding procedure. They banded 5 grade 3 varices. I have to go back fir more in 6 weeks.

I threw up when I woke up from the GA. I felt and still feel like something is lodged in my throat and chest. Like food stuck. Its hard to describe, but extremely uncomfortable. It hurts, but it's tight. Hard to put into words. All I know is I need this tight feeling, or what ever it is in my chest to go away. Is it heartburn?? They gave me fentynal. I have not took paracetamol as I don't like to put my liver through it? I don't see that working.

Any ideas what I can buy to get this feeling to go away fast? I live literally next door to a chemist. Will heartburn medicine work? It's not really painful, kinda, it's just horrible. Tight urgh

Thanks everyone.

Check with your Dr before you take ANYTHING!I have not had banding but it sounds normal to feel that type of discomfort for several days.

You had quite a major procedure, discomforts expected.

Sounds completely normal to me, I've had many banding done, was just advised to take paracetamol and eat soft food, it usually took about 3/4 days to wear off.

The feeling described is utterly normal post banding pain, however, one other thing that can cause a tight feeling is if you haven't expelled the air they pumped into your tubes. Did they mention appropriate pain killers, you'll not need loads but a little paracetemol would ease the initial soreness (this was infact advised by hubbies liver doctor).

Have you noticed yourself being 'gassy'? If so that's great, that's the air releasing if not then you need to get onto your endoscopy unit (details should have been received on release from hospital).

Hi! Thanks everyone. I'm just a big baby. I feel better today. I didn't rush out for otc meds. I had filled my fridge and freezer with soft foods. I'm finding milk is really helpful. Some vanilla ice cream. I woke up and made a warm latte. I've now got a fish mash pie in the oven. Milk is my saviour literally. The pain has subsided. It was hard to sleep. I'm getting used the foreign object feeling inside though.

To anyone having banding done, it's really not that bad when you look back on the event. It's just the whole procedure and that scary room you lay in. I'm terrified of hospital procedures. I've got to go back in 6 weeks for more banding. Hopefully that'll be the end of it. Fingers crossed, God Willing xxx Thanks for being here for us. Xx Samantha
